In a small town in the United States, a 19-year-old college student named Emily found herself in a familiar, yet frustrating situation. Her mother had immigrated to the US almost 20 years ago, just a few weeks before Emily was born. Now, at 57, her mother’s grasp of English still wasn’t strong enough to handle most communication independently. This reality had shaped Emily’s childhood, where translating conversations for her mother had become an almost daily responsibility.

Emily loved her mother deeply and appreciated the sacrifices she made to provide a better life for her family. However, the burden of constantly acting as her mother’s interpreter began to take its toll. After spending the last several months immersed in her studies across the country, Emily returned home for a break, only to be greeted by the same old routine. She quickly discovered that all the stress of balancing her own life with her mother’s needs was waiting for her.

On one particularly hectic day, the two were on a phone call to rebook a canceled doctor’s appointment. Emily was already feeling overwhelmed, juggling her own stressors alongside her mother’s frustrations. As they spoke, her mother, in a rush to communicate, began shouting her thoughts aloud, inadvertently overwhelming Emily further.

“I can’t hear! Can you be quiet for just a second?” Emily snapped, her patience fraying at the seams. This outburst shocked her mother, who had grown used to Emily’s supportive demeanor. The tension in the air thickened as Emily’s voice rose, bleeding frustration and exhaustion. “I can’t get the information if you’re yelling at me! Just calm down!”

It was a harsh moment, and the call took a turn for the worse. Emily’s mother hung up abruptly, upset and disappointed. “You need to fix your attitude!” she yelled before retreating to another room, leaving Emily standing in stunned silence, phone still in hand.

It hurt Emily to see her mother upset, but she couldn’t shake her own frustrations. For as long as she could remember, she had been put in a position where she needed to bridge the gap between her mother and the world around them. From doctor appointments to phone calls with service providers, she often felt more like a caregiver than a daughter. While Emily knew how much their situation stemmed from her mother’s struggle to adapt, she also felt a growing resentment that no matter how hard she tried, her mother wasn’t taking the steps to learn and communicate on her own.

The conflict didn’t end there. After the phone call incident, Emily spent more time reflecting on their relationship, the dynamics of dependence, and the toll it had taken on her own mental health. Each instance of translation felt like a reminder of the balance she was failing to maintain between her own life and her mother’s needs. She knew that the language barrier was a significant hurdle for her mother, but the emotional labor of constantly managing those interactions weighed heavily on her.

Conversations with peers in college often highlighted how different Emily’s upbringing was compared to theirs. Most of her friends were enjoying the freedom of young adulthood, focusing on self-discovery and personal growth while she felt tied down by familial obligations. It made her question whether it was all too much to bear. Was she being unfair to her mother? Or was she justified in her frustration?

As the days passed, Emily found herself contemplating her actions and their impact on her relationship with her mom. She wished she could articulate those feelings without it turning into another argument. She also yearned for some acknowledgment from her mother—an understanding of the emotional strain it put on her to always bear the communication load.

As much as her heart ached for her mother and her struggles, Emily couldn’t ignore the personal battle she faced daily. Balancing her own aspirations with the responsibilities thrust upon her created a tension that had to be addressed sooner or later. And while she loved her mom and would do anything for her, Emily realized she needed to communicate her feelings, hoping to foster a deeper understanding between them.

In the end, it wasn’t just a phone call that needed rebooking; it was their communication as a whole that required a serious discussion—one that they both needed to engage in for their relationship to truly thrive.
