Woman in a red swimsuit relaxes by an indoor swimming pool, checking her phone.

In a world where people often forget to consider others’ circumstances, one woman recently found herself amidst an unusual confrontation at her local gym. After recently rejoining, she was excited to get back to a routine of water walking in the warm pool, particularly for its therapeutic benefits. However, what started as a simple trip to the gym quickly turned into an unexpected showdown with an entitled stranger.

The woman, who has diabetes, relies on a continuous glucose monitor (CGM) to keep track of her blood sugar levels. This crucial device is worn on her arm and is linked to her phone, which serves as her reader. Given the nature of her condition, it is essential for her to keep her phone nearby, especially while exercising. To ensure her phone remained safe from water, she placed it in a Ziploc bag and set it on the edge of the pool. It was a practical solution, allowing her to monitor her health without compromising her workout.

As soon as she entered the pool, however, her plans quickly took a turn. An entitled woman, clearly unhappy about the phone’s presence, began shouting at her. “Phones are not allowed in the pool!” she yelled, exuding an air of authority that belied the situation. The gym-goer calmly explained her circumstances, emphasizing the necessity of having her phone accessible due to her diabetes. Instead of demonstrating any understanding, the angry woman doubled down, insisting that if she didn’t remove her phone, she couldn’t remain in the pool. Her tone was accusatory and dismissive, leaving no room for empathy.

Faced with such hostility, the woman stood her ground. “Go ahead,” she said, inviting the upset stranger to escalate matters if she felt it necessary. Unfazed, the entitled woman decided to push a button on the hoyer lift located nearby, an alert system designed to help those in need. Just moments later, staff members arrived to address the situation, engaging with the woman who had complained. The gym-goer was unable to hear what was being said but could see the staff members gesturing towards her, clearly discussing the events unfolding in the pool.

While the commotion continued, she chose to ignore the drama and continued with her water walking, determined not to let the confrontation derail her workout. She was there for her health and well-being, and no amount of entitled behavior was going to change that. Her detachment from the chaos allowed her to focus on her exercise, even as the feelings of tension bubbled beneath the surface.

After some time, different staff members returned to talk to the angry woman again. The gym-goer remained focused on her routine, content to let the staff handle the situation. Later on, as she made her way to the exit, her husband overheard the entitled woman sharing her grievances with another patron. “I got in trouble!” she complained, her tone one of indignation. It was apparent that she felt wronged by the situation, despite being the instigator of the conflict.

As the woman reached the front desk, she was approached by the staff who apologized for the entitled member’s behavior. They reassured her that she had done nothing wrong and that her health needs were valid and important. It was a welcomed gesture of support, particularly after the stressful encounter she had just experienced. “This was my first Karen!” she laughed, reflecting on the incident. It was one of those absurd moments that felt more surreal than anything else, although it also served to reinforce the challenges that people with medical conditions often face in public spaces.

Ultimately, the experience highlighted a clash of perspectives: the entitled woman’s rigid adherence to rules versus the gym-goer’s need for flexibility to accommodate her medical condition. Such encounters can leave a lasting impression, reminding us that the world is filled with people who may not fully understand the complexities of others’ lives. While the gym-goer navigated the pool with grace, the entitled woman’s inability to empathize marred what should have been a simple shared space for health and wellness.
