It started like any other summer day at the hotel pool. The sun was blazing, and guests were scattered about, some lounging on sunbeds, while others splashed in the cool water. Among these vacationers was a woman, let’s call her Sarah, who had come to the hotel to unwind and escape from her daily routine. Unfortunately, Sarah dealt with light sensitivity due to a medical condition, which made spending time in direct sunlight quite uncomfortable for her.

As she set up her spot near the edge of the pool, she immediately spotted an available umbrella and sighed with relief. The shade would provide some much-needed respite from the harsh sun. With a gentle tug, she opened the umbrella, positioning it perfectly over her sunbed, finally feeling the cool relief wash over her. But it wasn’t long before Sarah noticed that she wasn’t the only one using the area. Next to her, a woman named Karen was lounging comfortably on her own sunbed, soaking up the sun’s rays.
Karen cast a sideways glance at Sarah, her expression shifting from curious to visibly annoyed. “Um, excuse me?” she said, her tone slightly incredulous. “I was actually enjoying the sun over here. Do you really need that umbrella?”
Sarah was taken aback. “Yes, actually, I do,” she replied, trying to maintain her composure. “I have light sensitivity, and the shade is necessary for me.” But Karen, undeterred, simply scoffed and muttered something under her breath that sounded like, “Typical.”
Feeling her heart race slightly, Sarah mustered her courage and remarked, “You don’t own the pool, you know. There’s plenty of sunspace over there.” She gestured to the open area on the other side of Karen’s sunbed, which was bathed in sunlight. It wasn’t as if they were competing for the same patch of shade; there was ample room for both of them.
Fortunately, Karen’s husband, noticing the growing tension, intervened. “Hey, babe,” he said gently, “why don’t we move over a bit so we can get our sun without bothering her?” He helped Karen scoot her sunbed a few feet down, leaving Sarah to enjoy her shaded retreat in peace.
But this wasn’t the end of the story. Sarah couldn’t shake the feeling of discomfort from the encounter. She felt guilty for having raised her voice, even if only slightly, and doubted whether she could have handled the situation differently. Was she really in the right? Or was she just making a scene?
A few hours later, after a refreshing swim and some much-needed relaxation, the sun began to dip lower in the sky. Sarah noticed that Karen had indeed moved down a few feet to bask in the sunlight, but she still couldn’t help but feel the negative energy that lingered between them. Every time Sarah caught sight of Karen, who was now reclined and seemingly relaxed, she felt a twinge of regret. Was she the antagonist in this scenario? Should she have just let it go and taken her chances under the sun?
Later that night, Sarah found herself scrolling through Reddit, seeking solace and perspective from the community. She came across the “Am I the Asshole” subreddit and decided to share her story. She expressed her concerns about needing the umbrella and her exchange with Karen, asking others if her actions made her the villain in this poolside showdown.
After hitting “post,” Sarah sat back and waited for the responses to roll in. The feedback came pouring in, with many sympathizing with her need for shade due to her medical condition. However, some commenters pointed out that her response to Karen might have been a bit too defensive. In an edit to her post, she acknowledged that while she felt justified in needing the umbrella, she could have perhaps approached the situation with a bit more grace.
As the comments continued to roll in, Sarah found herself reflecting on the day’s events. While she still felt justified in her need for shade, she recognized that the situation could have been handled in a more peaceful manner. But it was too late for that now. The hotel pool had become the backdrop of an unexpected lesson in communication, and it was a memory that would likely linger in her mind for years to come.
