A lawyer in white suit confidently presents a case during a courtroom session with colleagues and audience.

It was just another ordinary Thursday for Sarah, a woman in her early thirties trying to move on after a messy breakup with her ex, Jake. They had been together for five tumultuous years, and now, with everything that had unfolded, Sarah just wanted her life back. But Jake’s recent legal troubles had made that much more complicated.

Jake was facing serious allegations, and Sarah couldn’t help but think he was guilty. She had witnessed the dark side of him during their relationship, and the news only solidified her instincts. However, what she found most frustrating wasn’t just the allegations against him; it was how Jake’s lawyer, Harris, had begun treating her like she was still part of the team, as if she were somehow obligated to support her ex in this battle.

It all started when Harris reached out to her after Jake’s initial court hearing. Sarah had received a text that read: “Hi Sarah! I hope you’re doing well. I’d love to discuss Jake’s case with you if you have some time.” Her heart raced. How could he even think she would want to talk about Jake, especially considering everything that had happened? She decided to ignore it, hoping that would send a clear signal.

A week later, Harris called her directly. “Sarah! I really need your input on a few things, especially regarding Jake’s character. I know you two had a long relationship.” At that moment, she felt a surge of annoyance. “Harris,” she replied firmly, “I don’t want to be involved in this. I think he’s guilty, and I’d rather not be part of your defense strategy.” There was a brief pause on the line, and she could almost hear him fumble for words, as if he hadn’t expected that response.

Despite her clear stance, Harris continued to show up at her workplace, casually asking if she could meet with him to discuss “details that could help Jake.” Each time felt like an invasion. She kept declining, growing increasingly frustrated. It was as if he was under the impression that she owed him – or Jake – some cooperation. It was baffling. She wanted nothing to do with either of them.

One day, after an unbearable week of dodging his attempts to speak with her, Sarah finally decided to confront him directly. She spotted Harris at a coffee shop near her office, laptop open, likely drafting something for Jake’s case. Taking a deep breath, she marched over. “Harris, can we talk?” she started, her tone serious.

“Of course! I’m always here to discuss—” he began, but she cut him off.

“No. You need to stop treating me like I’m part of Jake’s defense. I’m not. I don’t want to be involved, I think he’s guilty, and I don’t appreciate you making me feel like I have a role in this.” Sarah’s heart raced. She could feel the eyes of nearby patrons on them, but she didn’t care. She needed him to understand.

For a moment, Harris looked taken aback, his mouth opening as if to argue but then closing again. “I get it, Sarah. I just thought you might have some insight…” he started. Sarah noticed the subtle discomfort on his face, which quickly morphed into a defensive posture. “But you have to understand, I’m just trying to build a case!”

“You’re misunderstanding my position,” she replied, trying to keep her tone even. “I’m not here to help you build anything. I’ve moved on from Jake, and I certainly don’t want my name associated with what he’s accused of.”

With that, she turned on her heel and left, feeling both lighter and more irritated. Why should she have to justify herself? This wasn’t just about her past with Jake; it was about her own boundaries being disrespected. She hoped that this encounter would finally put an end to Harris’s insistence on dragging her into the mess that was Jake’s life.

As she walked back to her office, she felt a small sense of victory. But now, part of her worried: would Harris respect her wishes, or was this just the beginning of a lengthy battle on a different front? Only time would tell.
