In her 20s, Carrigan was the epitome of vibrant youth. Living in a bustling city, she thrived as the manager of a popular music venue, surrounded by artists and creativity. But after a cycle of short-lived flings that left her feeling hollow, she found solace in the attention from a musician who seemed different from the rest. This encounter led her to make a life-altering decision: she moved with him to a small, close-knit town, leaving her friends and her life behind.

However, upon arrival, reality sunk in. Carrigan quickly realized she had swapped one world for another that felt suffocating. The small-town dynamics were unforgiving; her boyfriend’s past relationship loomed large, and whispers about her presence echoed through the streets. Despite the hostility, Carrigan stood her ground, convinced that she could prove herself. It wasn’t long before the musician’s ex moved away and life settled into a new normal, but the scars of that initial reception lingered.

Fast forward over a decade, and Carrigan, now 41, had two children—a son who was 11 and a daughter aged six. Her son had autism, which meant Carrigan dedicated herself full-time to caring for him, abandoning her career and sacrificing her social life. The isolation weighed heavily on her shoulders; without friends and the lingering effects of being a stay-at-home mom in a town that had never fully accepted her, she felt as if she had become an invisible part of the local landscape. Her boyfriend, now 42, was regularly immersed in band practices and gigs, leaving Carrigan feeling more like a spectator in her own life.

Then came the moment that flipped her world upside down. Four months ago, while exploring her boyfriend’s Facebook account, curiosity got the better of her. What she found was shocking: six months’ worth of messages exchanged between him and another woman, filled with flirtation and plans that hinted at more than just friendly banter. They were arranging to meet that very night while Carrigan was left to manage life at home alone.

Confronting him over the phone, Carrigan sought clarity. He claimed he would be at band practice, but the betrayal felt too raw. After a heated argument, she discovered that his savings account was nearly empty, yet he had no explanation for where his money had gone. It was as if the ground beneath her had shifted; the man she trusted had been living a lie while she dedicated herself to their family.

Despite the betrayal, Carrigan couldn’t bring herself to kick him out. Her heart wrestled with compassion; she couldn’t make the father of her children homeless. So he became a resident on the couch, a constant reminder of the shattered trust. Yet every day, she found herself lost, feeling like a non-playable character (NPC) in her own life. Every decision, every moment seemed to revolve around her family, leaving little room for her to exist as an individual.

As weeks turned into months, Carrigan’s sense of isolation deepened. The town, already unwelcoming, felt even more burdensome without any outlets to express her frustrations or seek support. There were no community groups, no hobbies to dive into; the very thought of reaching out to talk to anyone filled her with dread. She felt trapped—stuck between the life she wanted and the reality she was facing.

In the quiet moments, when her children were asleep, Carrigan reflected on where her life had gone so wrong. She felt as though she had sacrificed everything for a relationship that left her reeling. Her boyfriend was surrounded by musicians, laughter, and late-night camaraderie while she was homebound with her two young kids, feeling more alone than ever. The thought of returning to her previous life was daunting; not only was it a logistical nightmare given her son’s educational needs, but it also meant admitting defeat in a battle she’d been fighting for so long.

Now, Carrigan found herself reaching out to the digital world, wanting to share her story, seeking advice, or maybe just someone to listen. She realized that she didn’t even know what she was asking for—a pep talk, a plan, or simply validation of her feelings. All she wanted was a moment of respite from the weight of the world and perhaps a glimpse of hope for what could come next.
