The sun was barely breaking through the clouds, casting a gentle light across the picturesque venue where the wedding was taking place. It should have been an occasion filled with joy and celebration, but for a pregnant woman named Sarah, it was the start of a turbulent day. At 32 years old and 16 weeks pregnant, Sarah had flown from another country to attend her husband’s cousin’s wedding. While the festivities were likely to be heartwarming, her body had other plans.

The night before the wedding, Sarah found herself battling an intense wave of nausea that had escalated to vomiting multiple times throughout the night. “This isn’t just the typical pregnancy nausea; I feel awful,” she thought, dreading what lay ahead. Even though she had been taking medication for her symptoms—a regimen that had, until now, seemed effective—traveling had seemingly thrown her body into chaos. It was early morning, and with the wedding only a few hours away, she felt trapped in a cycle of discomfort.
As she sat beside her husband, Mike, still feeling queasy, Sarah voiced her concerns. “I don’t think I can go to the wedding, Mike. What if I start throwing up during the ceremony? It would ruin the vibe.” While most people might be quick to dismiss such concerns, Mike was different. He listened attentively but remained focused on the social dynamics at play. “But it’s a small wedding. Your absence will be noticed, you know?” he said, trying to gently remind her of the family ties that bound them.
Sarah felt a pang of guilt at the thought of missing the celebration. After all, she had made the effort to travel there, and not attending meant she would be a no-show at a significant family event. Yet, the idea of sitting through the ceremony while feeling sluggish and nauseated filled her with anxiety. She couldn’t shake the feeling that her symptoms had been exacerbated by pushing herself too hard the previous day, trying to make the most of her time abroad and participating in pre-wedding activities.
The couple had discussed how important family gatherings were to Mike, especially since he had rarely seen his extended family due to the distance. Could Sarah really justify not attending? She considered the implications of her decision. On one hand, the thought of disappointing his cousin, who had expected everyone to attend, weighed heavily on her. She knew that weddings were emotional occasions where every guest’s presence was cherished. On the other hand, her health—and the health of the baby—had to come first. “Maybe I should just stick to bed and rest,” she thought.
Finally, after contemplating for what felt like hours, Sarah decided to take a chance on her unpredictable pregnancy. “What if I try to go?” she suggested, hoping that maybe, just maybe, she would feel better as the day went on. Mike was relieved to hear her willingness to attend, assuring her that he would fully support her decision, whatever it may be. His tone was never pushy or controlling; it was simply caring. “Let’s just see how you feel closer to the time,” he suggested.
As the clock ticked closer to the ceremony, Sarah found herself pacing between hope and despair. To her surprise, by the time of the wedding, she felt somewhat better. Far from being fully recovered, she knew that making an appearance was still a gamble. With a deep breath, she donned a comfortable dress, hoping for the best.
Arriving at the venue, the atmosphere was festive, filled with laughter, smiles, and the soft notes of wedding music. Despite her initial fears, she managed to smile through awkward stomach cramps and nausea. She even took photos with the bride and groom, joining in the celebration for just a brief moment. However, the allure of a cozy bed and television soon called her back. Knowing her limits, she waved goodbye and quietly slipped away, relieved that she had made the effort but equally grateful for her own wellbeing.
Once back in bed, wrapped in a blanket, Sarah reflected on the day’s events. She felt a mix of relief and contentment. Despite her earlier worries, she had managed to honor family while also listening to her body’s needs. As she fell into a comfortable routine of binge-watching her favorite show, she smiled, looking forward to what the future held with her family, both present and forthcoming.
