Bride and groom holding hands on a sunny day on a golf course in Colebee, NSW, Australia.

So, this happened about 3 years ago, during a distant relative’s wedding, and let me tell you, it was a trainwreck of epic proportions. In my culture, wedding invitations can get out of hand, and it’s not uncommon to end up with a guest list of 500 to 1000 people. This particular wedding was a cousin of my mom’s brother-in-law’s—yes, it was as convoluted as it sounds—and it was set on a golf course on one of the hottest days of the year, clocking in at about 45 degrees Celsius (that’s a scorcher, folks).

From the moment we arrived, it was clear that things were not going smoothly. Strike 1 hit as soon as we stepped onto the scene. Amidst the blasting music, a commotion erupted near the stage. Upon investigation, we found the groom’s mother in full meltdown mode, berating the event coordinators about the color of the flowers. Apparently, they had the audacity to go with a hue that wasn’t pink, which, in her eyes, was a cardinal sin.

Then came Strike 2. The groom, who was supposed to make a spectacular entrance, ended up in a car accident just moments before his big reveal. In a twist of absurdity, he ditched his fancy ride and arrived instead in a tuk-tuk. The entrance was, ironically, both hilarious and concerning at the same time.

Strike 3 unfolded when the bride stepped out in a completely different wedding dress than the one that had been meticulously chosen in the days leading up to the wedding. The dress she wore was a major point of contention, as her future mother-in-law had forked over a hefty $2500 for the original gown, a significant sum in our culture. This led to an explosive confrontation between the two mothers, leaving the bride visibly upset and caught in the crossfire.

Strike 4 struck when the groom attempted to mediate the chaos and shut down the argument. However, by this point, the mood was already soured, and everyone could feel the tension in the air. It was like watching a sitcom unravel right before your eyes.

Things didn’t get any better with Strike 5. The bride’s carefully crafted makeup began to melt off her face under the scorching sun. In tears, she was whisked away to an air-conditioned room for a touch-up. But just when it seemed like things might improve, someone accidentally spilled coffee all over her dress. She emerged from the ordeal looking far from glamorous—just a basic lipstick-and-eyeliner look was all she managed to salvage.

As if that wasn’t enough, Strike 6 came along when the officiator got caught in traffic and was late to the ceremony. Frustrated guests, particularly those with children, started complaining about the lack of food. In a desperate attempt to appease everyone, the caterers served the meals before the vows could even be exchanged.

Then, out of nowhere, Strike 7 occurred. A meddlesome relative kept pushing food onto the bride, who was already overwhelmed. In a frantic gesture, she accidentally pushed a plate away, sending food flying everywhere. Instead of showing any sympathy, the relative made a huge scene, branding the bride as disrespectful before storming off with her daughters, who were meant to be part of the wedding party.

By this time, it was Strike 8, and the bride was completely overstimulated. Clad in her heavy wedding dress and layers of jewelry, with the heat and chaos closing in on her, she finally burst into tears. The groom took her away again to try and calm her down, as the whole affair was spiraling out of control.

As if the universe was conspiring against them, the officiator still hadn’t shown up, and the couple was now MIA as well. Strike 9. Their families began to spiral into a panic, searching for them frantically. Meanwhile, several guests started slipping out, Strike 10, as half the party dwindled away before the ceremony even began.

Finally, after what felt like an eternity, the bride and groom, along with their siblings, made a grand return. But here’s the kicker—they didn’t return as the bride and groom who still needed to be wed; they came back already married! They had ditched the whole fiasco, called the officiator, and got hitched at a nearby KFC. The scene was straight out of a movie, with shocked mothers and a bemused crowd left behind.

The rest of the guests? Totally dismissed. Nobody knew what to do next, and chaos reigned as people began to leave, still trying to process the whole absurd sequence of events. It was one of those weddings you definitely wouldn’t forget any time soon.
