In a quiet neighborhood, there’s a little T intersection that seems relatively calm most of the time. But for one resident, it has become an everyday nuisance. The stop sign at the corner is there for a reason, but as with many things in life, not everyone seems to feel the need to obey it. This particular resident, let’s call her Alyssa, has grown increasingly frustrated with the drivers who roll through the stop sign without a second thought.

Alyssa had lived in her home for several years and had always been the kind of driver who respected traffic laws—yes, even stop signs. She knew that safety came first, and more importantly, she wanted to set a good example for others. So each time she would make a right turn from the corner towards her driveway, she would come to a complete stop at the sign, turn on her signal, and carefully back into her driveway. This practice had become a bit of a ritual; it was especially crucial since her driveway was only about 30 feet after the stop sign, making it a tight squeeze if she didn’t back in properly.

One night, after getting her groceries, Alyssa approached the intersection, fully aware that someone was tailing her. It was the same situation she had encountered time and time again, but tonight she decided she wouldn’t budge from her routine. As she reached the stop sign, she came to a full stop, turned right, and activated her turn signal. She glanced in her mirrors, saw that it was clear to back in, and began to do just that, maneuvering her car wide to ensure she had enough room.

Just as she was getting into the rhythm of reversing into her driveway, she heard the unmistakable screech of tires behind her. It was the car that had been following her closely. Before Alyssa could fully register what was happening, she saw the headlights of that vehicle slam on the brakes, skidding just enough to avoid a collision. Stealing a quick glance in her rearview mirror, she caught a glimpse of the passenger sitting in the car behind her. The way his face contorted told her everything she needed to know—he was beyond furious.

Alyssa couldn’t help but smirk a little. In that moment, she felt a sense of satisfaction wash over her. She had followed the rules, and yet here was this guy, flouting the very law that would have saved him from almost crashing into her. As she finally got her car snugly backed into her driveway, she noticed the angry passenger mouthing what looked like a string of expletives. She couldn’t hear him, of course, but the body language was more than clear. It was as if he was trying to communicate all of his frustrations onto her.

“Dude, this isn’t on me,” she thought to herself, shaking her head. “If you had just stopped at the stop sign like you’re supposed to, you wouldn’t be in this position.” Alyssa took a moment to gather her groceries, feeling a mixture of amusement and indignation. Did this guy honestly think he could just roll through a stop sign without consequences? Her mind was racing with all the times she had witnessed this exact same scenario unfold with other drivers, and how many accidents could have potentially been avoided had everyone just taken a moment to stop.

As she unloaded her bags, she couldn’t help but replay the scene in her head. The squeeze of her groceries into the bag, the frustrated driver’s face, and the almost cinematic way he had to slam on his brakes. Part of her felt a little guilty for enjoying the moment, but it also solidified her belief in standing by her convictions. Traffic laws existed for a reason, and maybe—just maybe—this could serve as a wake-up call for that passenger in the car.

Eventually, as she finished up and walked inside her house, Alyssa had to chuckle to herself. It was a small but inexplicably satisfying moment of petty revenge against the chaos of the impatient drivers in her neighborhood. As the engine noise of the disgruntled vehicle faded into the distance, she felt a sense of peace returning to her evening.
