This is a story about a woman who had been trapped in a cycle of emotional abuse and manipulation by her family for years. At just 29, she began to awaken to the reality around her and started contemplating moving out. However, what followed was five grueling years of intense sabotage and bullying that almost pushed her to the brink.

Throughout her young adult life, she faced relentless torment from her family. They stripped her of her belongings, including her clothes, and burdened her with debt as a result of sabotaging her academic pursuits. She had initially enrolled in a master’s program, but her family’s constant interference made it nearly impossible for her to succeed.

Despite her struggles, she had a glimmer of hope and thought about securing a job to break free from her family’s hold. But the mindset they instilled in her made her believe that any job she could find would be “degrading.” The humiliation she experienced when simply considering taking any job was enough to deter her time and again from pursuing a career that could have helped her gain independence. They drilled into her that finishing her degree was paramount and that working before graduating would waste her time—time she came to believe she was wasting on her own, not realizing that it was her family’s abuse that had kept her dormant.

Fast forward to today, and her situation was still bleak. By 34, she found herself with only one pair of work trousers and one pair of jeans. At one point, she had an extensive wardrobe, but over the years, her family had taken pleasure in seeing her dressed poorly—an intentional move to strip her of her dignity and sense of self.

One morning, she wore her only work trousers, completely unaware of what had transpired. As she traveled in the subway, she felt eyes on her. It was then she noticed a large cut on her calf. It wasn’t an ordinary wear-and-tear tear; it resembled a clean scissor cut. Curiosity got the best of her, and she attempted to investigate further, only to find that the same cut appeared on the other side of her trousers. It was clear to her that this was no accident.

The realization hit her hard: her mother had deliberately cut her trousers to sabotage her chances of employment again. This act of destruction wasn’t just about a piece of clothing; it was a calculated move in a long game of control and humiliation. To add insult to injury, both her divorced parents and her siblings seemed to relish in her misfortune, constantly reiterating that she was incapable of studying, working, or achieving anything at all.

With no financial resources and feeling utterly defeated, she began to search for online job opportunities, a task that proved to be incredibly difficult given her circumstances and the place she lived. A glimmer of hope flickered when she remembered a remote job she had previously lost, all thanks to her mother’s interference. It was clear they were all in on it, and she had become the scapegoat for their failings and frustrations.

As she reflected on her life, she couldn’t help but think of the turning points that could have changed everything. If only she had found a job at 29—or even at 19—she might have been able to escape the toxic environment she found herself in. Her story serves as a stark reminder of the complexities involved in familial relationships, especially when manipulation and control are at play.

She lamented her prolonged situation, wishing she could reach out to others who might be experiencing similar struggles. Her journey is a testament to the insidious nature of emotional abuse and the profound effects it has on personal development and ambition.
