It was one of those mundane Saturdays that somehow turned out to be anything but ordinary for an 18-year-old girl named Mia. Like many of her peers, she turned to dating apps to explore connections outside her usual circle. After a few swipes and texts, she matched with a guy named Jake. They exchanged some playful messages, and what was supposed to be a casual hangout blossomed into plans for an easygoing meet-up. Mia didn’t think much of it—just a quick hello and maybe some casual flirting.

On the day of the meetup, Mia felt a mix of excitement and nerves. She chose a comfortable outfit and put on her favorite light makeup, wanting to look her best without overdoing it. She figured it didn’t really matter since they had agreed it would be a low-pressure kind of day. They decided to meet at a nearby park, just a quick bike ride away from where Mia lived.
When Jake arrived, Mia felt a small flutter of anticipation. He looked pretty much like his pictures—a cute, easygoing guy. They exchanged awkward hellos and started walking towards the park together. They had light banter, and Mia felt relieved that the conversation flowed naturally. But there was one thing Mia had been craving since the moment she woke up that day: a soda from 7/11. It was hot out, and she mentioned that she’d like to stop for a drink.
“Sure, no problem,” Jake replied, and they headed towards the convenience store together. Once inside, Mia felt a bit overwhelmed by the sheer number of options. She decided on a fountain soda and quickly paid. As she made her way back outside, her heart raced with excitement at the prospect of enjoying the drink while they chatted. But when she stepped out of the store, her breath caught in her throat. Jake was nowhere to be seen.
She glanced around, thinking he might be parked nearby. Maybe he was just waiting in the car? But as she scanned the parking lot, her confusion morphed into a subtle panic. She pulled out her phone, thinking maybe he had just moved to a different spot or was trying to text her. But there it was—his name gray and blocked on her screen. Did he really just block her? Just like that?
Mia’s heart sank. She stood there trying to make sense of what had just happened. Had he really ditched her so quickly? Was it something she did? She replayed the moments in her head—did she take too long in the store? Did he think she was too much of a lightweight for stopping for a drink? As those thoughts swirled, another one tugged at her: what if he thought she looked different in person? Was there a chance that her casual wear and no-filter makeup made him rethink their connection? A rush of self-doubt washed over her.
Realistically, she knew that she didn’t need to take it personally, but the suddenness of it all stung. It felt like a slap in the face that she didn’t see coming. She walked the short distance back home, her mind buzzing with questions. Was it really that easy for someone to just vanish? Did he think she was less attractive than the photos? Was he just flaky in general? All these uncertainties clouded her thoughts.
As Mia reached home, she tried to shake off the incident. “It was just supposed to be a casual hangout,” she reminded herself. But the confusion lingered. She wanted to dismiss it as just another weird dating app experience, yet she couldn’t help but feel let down. The effort she put into looking good and trying to have a good time seemed wasted. What was the point of presenting her best self if it led to such a quick and unceremonious exit?
In the days that followed, Mia found herself reflecting on the encounter. She told a couple of her friends about it, who offered sympathetic ears and shared their own stories of dating app flops. “You dodged a bullet,” one friend said. Maybe she had, but that didn’t erase the sting of rejection so suddenly laid upon her.
Eventually, she moved on, just like everyone told her to do. The app stayed on her phone, and though she swiped here and there, part of her couldn’t shake the feeling that the world of online dating was just as unpredictable as it had always been. Would she ever fully understand the motivations of guys like Jake? Probably not, but the next time she met someone new, she’d be ready with a drink in hand—just in case.
