Not too long ago, a friend of mine found himself navigating the murky waters of an office culture that had turned AI into an obsession. His manager, who we’ll call “Dave,” had completely bought into the AI hype, pushing the narrative that every mundane task could and should be automated. This zeal for AI had morphed into a strange mandate in their IT department: “Even if it’s faster to do it manually than with Claude, get Claude to do it.”

This mindset had already begun to wear down the team. Morale was slipping, and employees were quiet quitting left and right. They knew the whole thing was ridiculous, but any pushback just seemed to bounce off Dave’s incessant enthusiasm for AI. He remained blissfully unaware of why his team was disengaged and frustrated.

Then came the fateful day when Dave gathered everyone for a biweekly scrum meeting. With a glint of excitement in his eyes, he declared, “Get creative with using AI for other tasks! It doesn’t just have to be with coding!” It was as if he’d just opened the floodgates for innovation while dangling the carrot of creativity in front of the team. Little did he know, his vague instruction would open the door for a little bit of malicious compliance.

For context, my friend was working at a company that developed software requiring HIPAA compliance. Part of this involved undergoing tedious online courses that made everyone’s eyelids heavy with boredom. The courses involved watching long videos and answering quizzes that felt designed to suck the life out of anyone trying to learn about compliance regulations.

When Dave made his grand proclamation, my friend couldn’t help but see an opportunity. He knew full well that Claude, an AI tool he had been tasked with using for various projects, could handle the mundane tasks of the HIPAA compliance course. So, he decided to put Dave’s challenge to the test. He pointed Claude at the online course platform, logged in, and let the AI take the wheel.

With Puppeteer—an automation tool that allows code to interact with web pages like a human would—my friend essentially turned over the reins to Claude. The AI seamlessly navigated through the course, watched all the required videos, and tackled the quizzes. My friend just sat back, amused and a little amazed at how effortlessly Claude was working through the content. It was a surreal experience, and it felt oddly satisfying to watch AI do something so tedious.

When the day of the next scrum meeting came around, tension was in the air. Dave, brimming with excitement, asked the team how they had creatively employed AI beyond coding tasks. One by one, his team mumbled responses, but my friend decided to play it up. He proudly announced, “I got Claude to do my HIPAA compliance test for me!”

Laughter erupted in the room. The other team members couldn’t hold back, and it was clear they found the whole situation hilarious. Meanwhile, Dave’s face shifted from excitement to confusion before settling on a sheepish acknowledgment. He had to admit, albeit begrudgingly, that there were some things he might not want AI to do for the team.

But the best part of the whole ordeal? The online course provider charged the company based on the number of students who took the course. So now, Dave faced an awkward situation. He would either have to purchase another seat for my friend to take the certification again next year—or accept that my friend had successfully dodged the bullet, at least for a little while longer. It was a delightful twist where my friend not only avoided the drudgery of the course but also got a good laugh at his manager’s expense.

As for my friend, he’s still plotting his escape from this AI-obsessed environment. With a little bit of luck, maybe he’ll find a workplace where practicality reigns supreme over the whims of trendy tech obsessions.
