For the past two years, Sarah had been living in relative peace, having gone no contact with her mother-in-law (MIL) and the rest of her in-laws. The decision to distance herself had been a long time coming, rooted in a mixture of boundary violations and passive-aggressive remarks that had piled up over the years. Now that she and her husband, Mark, were preparing for their trip back to their home country, Sarah was both excited and anxious about the possibility of running into her in-laws again.

Mark had his own complicated relationship with his family. He loved them but had never fully understood how their behavior affected Sarah. When he suggested keeping their arrival date a surprise, Sarah felt a wave of relief wash over her. It seemed like a solid plan to avoid any awkward encounters. They would arrive discreetly and head straight to Sarah’s parents’ home while Mark would stay at his family’s place. Perfect. Or so they thought.

As the departure date approached, Mark casually mentioned that his parents would be accompanying him to the airport. Sarah felt a knot form in her stomach. “Wait, what do you mean they’re coming with you?” she asked, panic creeping into her voice.

“It’s just what they do! They like to send me off. It’s part of our culture,” Mark explained, his voice laced with confusion at her sudden anxiety. “Why? Is that a problem?”

Sarah quickly searched her mind for a calming response but instead blurted out, “Yes! It’s a huge problem! I don’t want to see them!”

Mark paused, his brow furrowing. He clearly hadn’t considered the implications. “What do you want me to do? I can tell them not to come, but that might upset them.”

“This isn’t just about them being upset! It’s about me feeling safe and not having to navigate awkward conversations or confrontations after the years of stress they’ve caused,” Sarah said, her heart racing. “I just can’t do it.”

Over the next few days, Sarah’s mind was in a whirlwind of “what ifs.” What if they spotted her at the airport? What if they approached her? Would Mark really stand up to his family to protect her? She found herself searching for advice online, wondering how others in similar situations had managed to avoid uncomfortable encounters.

As they neared the departure date, Sarah compiled a mental list of possible escape routes and strategies. “I could take a different terminal,” she thought. “But what if that’s impractical?” She also considered showing up at the airport super early to beat them there, but that would mean sacrificing precious time with her own family. Just as quickly as solutions came to mind, new complications arose.

Mark sensed her anxiety peaking as they finalized their plans. “Look, let’s think this through. We can time our arrival so that you’re not around when they get there. I could get there early and just text you once I’m through security,” he suggested, clearly trying to be a supportive partner. But Sarah’s mind was like a hamster on a wheel, spinning faster with every suggestion.

“What if the flight is delayed? What if they get through security faster than expected? Or what if they notice I’m not there?” she fretted, picturing her mother-in-law’s piercing stare and knowing the gossip that would ensue at family gatherings if they ended up in the same place.

As they packed their bags, the tension in the air was palpable. Mark reassured her that everything would be fine, but Sarah’s worries were stubbornly persistent. She needed a solid plan, one that didn’t leave room for error. They both knew avoiding a confrontation would feel like a small victory, but the thought of actually executing it left Sarah feeling anxious and trapped.

The day before they left, they went over their plans one last time. Mark promised to text her updates, and they made a pact that if things got tense, they would absolutely prioritize her comfort, even if it meant causing a stir with his family. They both knew that once they stepped foot in their home country, the reality of the situation could shift dramatically.

Despite her reservations, she held onto a sliver of hope that this trip would proceed without incident. Maybe, just maybe, avoiding her MIL at the airport could become a reality. But as they headed to the airport on the big day, Sarah couldn’t shake the feeling that fate had other plans.
