It’s a tale that many people might relate to, the kind of story that reads like a cautionary tale about love gone wrong. A 33-year-old woman, who we’ll refer to as Sarah, found herself trapped in a toxic marriage that had spiraled into a cycle of abuse and control. After enduring 225 days of her husband’s toxic behavior, she finally decided that enough was enough. The moment that pushed her over the edge? He tried to take away the WiFi router.

Sarah had been struggling for quite some time. Working as a nurse with a demanding schedule and juggling the responsibilities of motherhood, she often felt like she was the only one keeping the household afloat. Her husband, on the other hand, seemed content to do the bare minimum. While Sarah spent her days caring for their children, handling chores, and maintaining the house, her husband barely lifted a finger. He didn’t cook or help with the kids, often opting for fast food over nutritious meals, then criticizing the kids’ diets.

The underlying issue in their marriage intensified when he impulsively decided to leave his job at Amazon to pursue CDL school. This decision, made without much thought, meant that he intended to drop his hours to only two days a week while doing DoorDash. While Sarah already paid half the bills, he now expected her to contribute to the mortgage as well. One of his ‘solutions’ to their financial strain was to cut off the WiFi—something Sarah couldn’t fathom. “I’m a nurse,” she thought, “I can’t just live without internet, especially with the kids.”

As if the WiFi battle wasn’t enough, Sarah faced emotional turmoil from his behavior on social media. Just days before their anniversary, he shared a disturbing video on Facebook featuring a woman who spoke about how to avoid becoming a single mom. The video focused on themes of submission and obedience, with the message that a woman should not speak back and should primarily serve her husband. It was an affront to everything Sarah believed in, and it left her feeling devalued and mocked. “That’s a fantastic way to never get your dick sucked and become a single dad,” she quipped back at him, but the damage had already been done.

Things escalated when her husband became increasingly controlling. He knew that Sarah monitored their home through WiFi cameras, as they often had conversations about their family life in front of them. When he decided to turn off the WiFi, he claimed he didn’t want his life being filmed. Confused and hurt, Sarah reminded him of the abusive behavior he displayed, especially towards their son, including threats and name-calling. His response was to be even more obstinate, stating that he cut the line to the house, which turned out to be a bluff that left Sarah in tears.

After weeks of coldness and detachment, Sarah sensed that their relationship was deteriorating further. The pressures of financial strain and emotional neglect painted a bleak picture of their future. She decided to assert herself by finding an old router and setting it up with new passwords. This small act of rebellion was a way for her to reclaim a sense of control in her life, even if her husband remained unmoved.

Meanwhile, Sarah’s family and friends were urging her to seek counseling or consider a temporary separation, yet she felt burned out from the emotional rollercoaster. The resentment had built up over the years, making it hard for her to forgive past grievances, including instances of him punching walls out of anger and making hurtful remarks. Even though he never hit her or the kids, the emotional scars ran deep.

To add insult to injury, Sarah recalled how her husband had sabotaged her children’s birthday parties, like the time he whisked their daughter away just before her third birthday party, returning an hour late. The chaos he caused left Sarah feeling defeated after she had put so much effort into planning a joyful celebration.

Feeling exhausted and frustrated, Sarah finally resolved that she couldn’t live like this anymore. With all the toxic behavior weighing heavily on her heart and mind, she could no longer ignore the reality of her situation. The process of separation was underway, and she was ready to consult a lawyer for a divorce. She knew she deserved better and was finally willing to take steps toward a future where she could reclaim her happiness.
