When Jenna finally made the decision to cut her mom out of her life, it felt like a liberating moment. It had taken years of uncomfortable realizations and painful experiences to get there, but in the end, she knew it was what she had to do. The decision, however, didn’t stem from a single incident; it was the culmination of a lifetime of feeling second best, overshadowed by her sister Lily, who seemed to be the golden child in their mother’s eyes.

Jenna often found herself in the background of family gatherings, sitting quietly while her mother praised every little thing her sister achieved. Whether it was a good grade or winning a game, whatever Lily did was cause for celebration, while Jenna’s accomplishments barely merited a nod of acknowledgment. As the years rolled by, Jenna learned to suppress her own pride and excitement for her own achievements. It was easier to blend into the background than to fight for recognition.

There were countless moments when favoritism reared its ugly head—like the time Jenna scored a scholarship to her dream school, only to be met with a half-hearted, “That’s nice, dear,” while her mother went on and on about Lily’s art exhibition. Or when their mother demanded Jenna change her plans for the weekend just so she could help with a last-minute favor for Lily, without any regard for Jenna’s own commitments. It was exhausting, and Jenna slowly began to realize that she was worthy of more than being an afterthought.

The real turning point came when Jenna suggested family therapy as a way to mend their relationships. For years, she had held onto the hope that if they could just communicate better, things could change. She believed that with the help of a neutral third party, they could navigate their long-standing issues. But her mother’s response was swift and definitive: “I don’t see the point in that. You just need to get over it.” It was in that moment Jenna understood that her mother would never acknowledge the pain and hurt that had been inflicted over the years.

Feeling frustrated and devalued, Jenna made the decision to cut off contact. She blocked her mother on all social media platforms and stopped answering her calls. It wasn’t a choice made lightly; it was an act of self-preservation. The weight of years of emotional neglect had finally pushed her to a breaking point. But her mother, oblivious to the true reasons behind Jenna’s actions, interpreted it as a rejection based on that one refusal to attend therapy. “I can’t believe she’s blocked me over just this!” her mom would lament to anyone who would listen.

In the months that followed, Jenna focused on herself. She poured her energy into her passions and built a supportive network of friends who celebrated her for who she was, not for how well she fit into someone else’s narrative. She began to discover her own worth, realizing that she didn’t need her mother’s validation to be proud of herself. Every little step she took away from her mother’s shadows was a step toward healing.

Occasionally, Jenna would hear snippets from family members who tried to mediate, conveying messages from her mother expressing confusion and sadness. “She just doesn’t understand why Jenna would cut her off over a therapy issue. Doesn’t she realize it was just one little conversation?” They couldn’t grasp the depth of Jenna’s feelings. They didn’t see the years of being sidelined or the countless times she had tried to win her mother’s love and failed.

In this twisted version of reality, her mother remained the innocent victim of misunderstandings, rather than the source of her daughter’s pain. To Jenna, it felt surreal—how could her mother miss the point entirely? It was as if Jenna’s whole life had been a series of attempts to explain her hurt, yet her mom only saw the surface-level actions. It left Jenna questioning if any real change could ever happen or if she had just made the right choice to walk away for good.

As time went on, Jenna’s resolve strengthened. She understood that she had made the right choice, even if her mother could only grasp a fraction of the complex emotions involved. While her mother may never understand the ‘missing missing reason’ behind Jenna’s decision, Jenna found peace in the clarity she gained from the separation. After all, sometimes it’s just not worth it to stay in a relationship that costs more than it gives.
