This is a story from high school that still makes people chuckle. It all started with the yearbook, a tradition every student looked forward to, especially those who loved to reminisce about their formative years. The yearbook was released mid-summer, which meant it usually included the latest events before the new school year kicked off. Unfortunately, seniors missed out on getting everyone to sign their yearbooks before heading off to college, which was a bummer we all felt for them.

Our protagonist, let’s call her Mia, had an unfortunate slip-up during her sophomore year. She forgot to submit her order form for the yearbook, so she didn’t even get to see it until the beginning of her junior year. It was the first week back, and while her friends were eagerly collecting signatures, she was awkwardly standing by, flipping through the pages of someone else’s book. That’s when she stumbled upon a photo that took her entirely by surprise—a candid shot of her playing piano at the talent show, nestled next to a quote she would never say. The quote read something along the lines of, “I was really nervous before going out on stage, but when I heard the applause, it was all worth it.”
Mia couldn’t believe what she was reading. Not only did she think the quote was cringe-worthy, but the fact that it was completely fabricated irked her more than she’d like to admit. She had always been a believer in authenticity and truth, and this felt like a betrayal. If she had received the yearbook earlier, she might have brushed it off. But learning about the situation so late only fueled her frustration. In a fit of indignation, she decided to confront the yearbook advisor.
When Mia approached the advisor, she expected to have a constructive conversation. Instead, the advisor dismissed her concerns, stating that it was “too difficult to get quotes from teenagers.” Mia couldn’t believe what she was hearing. Instead of an apology, the advisor issued her a parting shot that stung: “If you don’t want to be quoted in the yearbook, don’t worry about it. You won’t be in it.”
Talk about a mic drop. The advisor’s words hit Mia hard. She knew, with a sinking feeling in her stomach, that there would be no candid photos of her in the junior or senior yearbooks. It was a low blow, and while she could have argued her case further, Mia quickly assessed her situation. She didn’t want to come off as conceited or seek conflict, especially when the advisor seemed so set in her ways.
However, Mia wasn’t one to back down easily. She realized that while the advisor could keep her out of candid shots, there was nothing stopping her from being present in the official club photos. So, she devised a plan with her friends, who were amused by her predicament and eager to help. As an involved student, Mia was already a member of several clubs, but there were also plenty of clubs where she was more of a ‘sometimes-helping-hand’ rather than an official member. And then there were clubs whose advisors were a bit oblivious and wouldn’t notice an extra face in the crowd.
For the next two years, Mia joined every possible club photo. Whether it was the drama club, the environmental society, or even a random chess club, you could find her waving enthusiastically in the background, a huge grin plastered across her face. Each time she entered a group photo, she made a point to greet the yearbook advisor with a cheerful “hello, Ms. X,” watching for her reaction. With each wave and smile, Mia could see the advisor’s discomfort grow. It was a little game, a small bit of revenge for the slight she felt was unjust.
In the end, Mia was in dozens of club photos by the time her senior yearbook came out. The yearbook advisor’s sour face was worth every bit of effort. Every time the advisor saw Mia smiling in a picture, it was a reminder that she couldn’t erase her from the memories of high school, even if she wished to. And for Mia, that was more satisfying than any fabricated quote could ever be.
