A few years back, a young hospitality worker found herself in a tough spot while juggling her emotions and her duties. She worked at a restaurant a couple of hours away from her family, and on this particular day, she received devastating news that changed everything. Just before her shift, her mother called with the heart-wrenching news that their beloved Labrador, Poppy, was being put to sleep. Poppy was the last of their two dogs; a lively companion who had brought joy and warmth to their lives, especially during tough times.

Earlier, the same year, she had been home to say goodbye to their other dog, who they also had to let go. Knowing how much the dogs meant to her family, she was grateful she could be there for that farewell. But this time, the distance made it impossible for her to be by Poppy’s side, and as she took the call, she felt the tears welling up in her eyes as she said her goodbyes over the phone. She composed herself as best as she could, washed her face in the staff bathroom, and tried to get on with her shift.
However, the day took a turn for the worse when she encountered a particularly obnoxious customer. The man was slightly drunk and clearly in a jovial mood, but what happened next felt like a kick to her gut. He spotted her and, without any understanding of the emotions she was dealing with, laughed and asked if she had just gotten dumped. In a split second, her heart dropped. She didn’t have the energy to process his insensitivity; all she could feel was the weight of her loss pressing down on her.
“No,” she replied, her voice wavering slightly. “My parents just called to tell me they’ve put my dog to sleep. Because of the distance, I couldn’t hug her or say goodbye in person. So excuse me if I look upset.” The words tumbled out, laced with a mix of grief and anger. She watched as his expression shifted from amusement to something resembling shock. He stammered an apology, but she wasn’t in the mood for half-hearted sentiments.
Feeling her emotions bubble to the surface, she turned on her heel and walked away, leaving the man standing there, speechless. Her mind raced, overwhelmed by the juxtaposition of her pain and his thoughtlessness. She was grateful that she had put herself first in that moment and had refused to let his ignorance affect how she felt about her loss. But the encounter lingered in her mind, reminding her of how some people could be so oblivious to the struggles others face.
The icing on the cake came later when the same customer approached the bar to order another drink. She had a choice: to serve him or ignore him altogether. She chose the latter. The look on his face when he realized he wouldn’t be getting another drink from her was almost satisfying. It was as if he finally understood the consequences of his earlier actions, even if just for a fleeting moment.
This wasn’t just an isolated incident but rather a stark reminder of how people can sometimes be utterly disconnected from the reality of others. In a world where kindness can go a long way, some individuals still choose to be insensitive, not realizing that everyone they encounter has their own battles to fight. While she continued her shift, she found a renewed resilience inside herself—a determination to stand her ground and protect her emotions from those who dared to belittle them.
Months later, this experience became a testament to the importance of empathy and understanding. Yet, she held no moral expectations from the drunken customer who had crossed her path that day; he was just a stranger in a fleeting moment of time. What mattered more was how she navigated her grief and emerged stronger—an experience that owned her own narrative, untouchable by the callousness of others.
