man in blue denim jacket using phone

It was around 4:30 AM when the sun had barely begun to rise, casting a dim light over the new city. He was standing at a chowk, waiting for a tempo to take him to the railway station. He had planned to pick up his mom, who was arriving on an early train. With the chilly air nipping at his skin, he looked at his phone, frustrated by the lack of available tempos. After several minutes of waiting and watching, he decided to book a Rapido, hoping it would arrive quickly.

As he stood there, his focus shifted to the app on his phone, checking the arrival time of his ride. Out of the corner of his eye, a scooter pulled up a few meters behind him. The driver looked a bit off, but he brushed it aside, concentrating on his phone and the train’s status. The last thing on his mind was any trouble.

Suddenly, the scooter’s engine roared to life. The driver accelerated, swerving dangerously close to him. In a split second, the man on the scooter stretched his hand toward him. There was a fleeting moment of confusion—he couldn’t tell if the guy was trying to touch him or snatch his phone. In that moment, his heart raced. Instinct kicked in; he yelled at the scooter driver, letting an array of curses fly. The situation escalated quickly.

Startled, the driver came to a stop a little ahead of him. A tense exchange ensued, with the driver shouting back. The young man, fueled by adrenaline, taunted him, inviting him to come back if he had the guts. Instead of confronting him further, the scooter man pulled a U-turn, weaving around the circle and passing by him again, this time choosing to leave altogether.

In the aftermath of the encounter, a wave of fear washed over him. He was still processing what had just happened as his Rapido finally arrived. Climbing into the back seat, he couldn’t shake the unsettling feeling. This city was new to him; he had barely settled in, and he was already faced with something so bizarre and intimidating.

The incident gave him a glimpse into the vulnerability that many people, particularly women, might feel in isolated places at odd hours. He found himself reflecting on all the stories he had heard—the encounters that left people shaken, questioning their safety, and wondering about the intentions of strangers. What had just happened felt like a reminder of that reality, one he hadn’t experienced until now.

His mind whirled with thoughts about what he could have done differently. Maybe he should have thrown something at the guy or tried to grab onto the scooter. But then reality settled in—the precariousness of the situation loomed large. He was alone, and this was a new city where he didn’t know the landscape or the people. The thought of potentially escalating the conflict into something much worse made him second-guess his instincts. What if the guy had friends nearby or was armed? He couldn’t afford to take that risk; he thought about his family, who would be devastated by any harm coming to him.

In what felt like an instant, everything had happened so fast. His eyes had frozen in shock, and all he could feel was a rush of adrenaline that left him shaky and overwhelmed. He was a guy, and still, he had experienced something that shocked him. Whether the scooter man had malicious intent or simply acted impulsively was something he couldn’t discern, but whatever it was certainly didn’t feel right.

As he sat in the backseat, his mind continued to race. He wondered if he had handled the situation appropriately or if there was something more he could have done. Was it right to yell? Should he have taken a different approach? The questions lingered in his mind, haunting him as he made his way to the railway station.

In the end, he thought about how quickly life can change and how vulnerable one can feel in unfamiliar surroundings. He felt compelled to share his encounter, hoping maybe someone could provide insight or share their experiences in similar situations. He realized the complexities of interactions with strangers, especially when adrenaline is high and safety is at stake.
