The first sign, Eli Yoder says, was where his mother stood. He says he had driven out to visit her in full Amish dress, and instead of opening the door she stepped out of the house and onto the porch to talk to him there.

Yoder, who posts on TikTok as @eli.theexamishpreacher, tells the story in a video posted on October 2, 2026, the day after the visit by his account. One line of text sits on screen from start to finish: “I knew right away that something was off.” He films it in front of a bookshelf, wearing a wide straw hat, a bright blue shirt and black suspenders.

Those clothes are the subject of the first half of the video. “Normally, she always opens the door if I follow the rules, which I did,” he says, and then he goes through the rules one item at a time. The hat, which he tips toward the camera, goes on to cover his haircut. Then the suspenders and the shirt. “I even button it all the way up underneath like that,” he says, with a hand at his collar. “That is all her rules, you know.”

The routine for arriving was the usual one too. He says he “parked my car next door and then walked over like usual.” None of it got him past the porch. “But she wouldn’t let me in the house.”

What she said out there, according to Yoder, is that she no longer wants him to come out to see her, in his words, “for the rest of my life.” He says she told him this was what was on her heart, and that she gave a reason: “everything we talk about ends up on TikTok.” By his account she also told him that followers of his come out and bring up what he posts, that she hears about it all the time, and that it is not okay to talk about it.

He then repeats the condition as he says she put it: “If you’re doing videos to talk about our life, the Amish culture, you are no longer welcome here.” His mother does not appear in the video, and the conversation is given only as he tells it.

Yoder puts the obvious question to himself on camera: “But why am I still talking about it?” His answer is that he is not going to stop. “I will continue educating the whole world on my people, the old order conservative Amish, and the differences between every Amish community,” he says. He adds that he will not be silenced “by religion and not even my flesh and blood, even if it’s my mama.”

He ends on one line, delivered straight to the lens: “If the truth makes you uncomfortable, don’t blame the truth, but blame the lie that made you comfortable.”

The two objections Yoder relays are separate problems, and anyone who posts about relatives and still wants to be let in the door can check them separately before the next visit. The first is private talk turning into content. The fix is to ask the relative, before filming anything, which parts of the last visit they would not want repeated, and to treat what is said inside the house as off the record unless they say otherwise.

The second is strangers. Yoder says his mother told him his followers come out and raise the videos with her. A creator in that position can say plainly in a video that viewers should not go to a relative’s home or community to discuss it, and can leave out the details that tell a viewer where that home is.

The clothes are the third check. Yoder says he followed every dress rule and parked next door as usual, and it made no difference, because by his account the objection was never about the hat or the shirt. Before making the drive, ask whether the visit is still welcome and whether anything has changed since the last one, by whatever means the family uses to pass word, so the answer does not come on the porch.

And if the answer is a condition, as Yoder says it was here, ask for it in the relative’s own words and repeat it back, the way he repeats his mother’s. He says he heard “no longer welcome” tied to one specific thing, the videos, and he tells viewers which way he has chosen.
