Woman holding a baby

Everyone talks about needing a village after a baby arrives. One mom says she found hers in a single person. Creator @itsme_tahni shared a video praising her mother in law, saying the woman’s “unhinged behavior” needs to be studied and that she is literally the village every new mother needs, all rolled into one.

In her caption, the mom says she does not know how she would have survived physically or mentally without her mother in law, especially after her first baby, when her husband was working insane hours and received no parental leave.

Five Weeks of Help After Baby Number One

According to the creator, her first baby was born on a Friday night. Her husband had his own business and could not be home much, so her mother in law stepped in. She moved into the couple’s house for about five weeks.

During that time, the creator says, her mother in law cooked, cleaned and emptied the hospital bag. She did all of the washing and drove the new mom to her hospital appointments. For anyone who has ever stared at a mountain of laundry on very little sleep, that list probably sounds like heaven.

Showing Up Again for the Second

When the second baby arrived, the creator says her husband could not be there. Her mother in law came straight to the hospital, snacks in hand. It is a small detail, but anyone who has had a hospital stay knows how much a familiar face and something to eat can matter.

Then Came Twins

The third pregnancy was twins, and the creator says she was admitted to the hospital at 24 weeks and stayed for three months. Her mother in law was still working full time, yet she came down every week for four nights to help the creator’s husband, cooking and cleaning for the household again.

That is a lot of driving, cooking and laundry on top of a full time job. It is easy to see why the creator wants her story shared.

Why Postpartum Help Matters

Many families find the weeks after a birth to be some of the most tiring of their lives. Recovery, feeding, sleepless nights and a household that still needs to run can pile up fast. Doctors and family experts often encourage new parents to line up support in advance, and to accept help when it is offered. If you are lucky enough to have someone like the creator’s mother in law, a thank you may be the least you can offer. If you are on the other side, wondering how to help, the ideas below may be useful.

Ways to Support a New Mom

  • Ask what she needs, then do it. “Let me know if you need anything” is kind, but specific offers like “I am doing a load of laundry and bringing dinner tonight” are much easier to accept.
  • Bring food that is easy to eat. Freezer meals, fruit, snacks and anything that can be eaten one handed are popular with new parents. Check about any allergies or dietary needs first.
  • Take a household task off her plate. Dishes, laundry, tidying and grocery runs may not sound exciting, but they can be a huge relief.
  • Offer rides. Appointments for mom and baby can be hard to manage, especially for a mom who is recovering.
  • Let her rest. Hold the baby while she naps or showers. Even an hour can feel like a gift.
  • Keep visits short and useful. A helpful guest brings something, does something and leaves when the mom needs quiet.
  • Check in later. Help often drops off after the first couple of weeks. A text or visit a month in can mean a great deal.
  • Support the whole family. As the twins story shows, a partner running the house on his own may need meals and a hand too.

If you ever feel overwhelmed after a birth, or you have concerns about your health or mood, reach out to your doctor or midwife. Asking for help is a normal part of caring for a new baby.

The creator’s video is a sweet reminder that family support can make an enormous difference. Whether it is a mother in law, a neighbor, a friend or a sister, the person who quietly shows up with a casserole and a laundry basket may never know how much that help meant. This mom clearly knows, and she wanted the world to hear about it.
