A parent pushes a stroller down a busy theme park street toward a castle.

Most of us have seen a stroller roll or tip when a parent turns away for a second. For one family waiting to meet Pluto at Magic Kingdom, that moment nearly became something worse, until a stranger in line who was paying attention reached out and caught it.

A parent pushes a stroller down a busy theme park street toward a castle.

The stranger was Olivia Simone, who later shared the story on her YouTube channel, Olivia Simone, as part of a video of Disney World stories from her time as a cast member. She says the first two stories in the video happened when she was a guest meeting characters, and both involved awkward moments with characters and fellow cast members.

A Parade, a Pluto Line and a Christmas Tree

Olivia went to Magic Kingdom to see the parade and meet Pluto. It was the very beginning of November, one of the first days when all the Christmas decorations were up. Directly in front of her in line was a family: a mom, a son and a daughter in a double stroller.

The mom and the boy walked up to meet Pluto. The mom glanced back and asked her daughter, “Are you sure, honey, do you want to meet Pluto?” The little girl started to climb out.

That is when things went wrong. “As she starts getting out, her stroller starts falling back,” Olivia says. Luckily, she was paying attention, and not watching the people taking pictures in front of the giant Christmas tree. As the stroller came down, she caught it. But it had so much momentum and was so big that she had to go with the momentum before bringing it back up.

The Look on the Attendant’s Face

The reaction was instant. “The mom was shocked, Pluto was like oh my god, and the attendant was horrified,” Olivia recalls.

She says she could almost see the thoughts running through the character attendant’s mind: oh my gosh, that was almost a near miss, a child had been left unattended in a stroller and nobody was near it. Olivia’s takeaway was simple and a little funny. “Thankfully I was there to save the kid.”

Her Turn With Pluto

The story has a sweet second half. When it was finally Olivia’s turn to meet Pluto, she explains why she always tries to see him when she is at a park. She was really missing her dog at the time, and Pluto is Mickey’s dog, so he was “close enough.”

Her moment was cut short, though. A toddler of about two, who had been taking pictures at the Christmas tree, ran over and grabbed Pluto’s leg, and the whole family came over with the little one. Olivia didn’t mind. She had lived there for several months, so she says she could simply meet Pluto again.

Lessons for Parents in Any Crowd

This story ended safely, but it is a good reminder for anyone who has ever pushed a stroller through a theme park, a mall or an airport. A few general safety habits can help.

  • Set the brakes before you step away. Most strollers have a parking brake. Even if you are only going a few feet to a photo or a meet and greet, set it first.
  • Mind the weight on the handlebar. Heavy bags hung on the handles can make a stroller tip backward when a child climbs out. Try to keep bags in the basket underneath, and keep a hand on the stroller as your child gets out or in.
  • Buckle and unbuckle with care. When your child is unstrapping or climbing out, treat that as the moment to stay close. In this story, the stroller started to fall just as the little girl was getting out.
  • Use two sets of eyes. If you are juggling more than one child, ask another adult or an older child to watch the stroller while you take photos. A second pair of eyes can matter.
  • Keep your eyes up in a crowd. The best part of Olivia’s story is that she was watching what was happening rather than staring at the decorations. Being aware of your surroundings in a busy line can help you spot a small problem before it becomes a big one.

Why Small Moments Like This Matter

Stories like this are why so many people love hearing from former theme park employees. The big rides and fireworks are fun, but the memorable parts are often the small, unplanned moments between strangers in a line.

Olivia did not set out to be a hero that day. She was a guest in line, hoping for a hello from a cartoon dog she loves. But because she was paying attention, a little girl got through a close call without harm, and a character attendant got a very quick lesson in what can happen when a stroller is left alone.

The next time you are standing in a long line, take a moment to look around. You never know when being the one who notices could make a difference for somebody else.
