MacBook Air on table

In the world of Facebook Marketplace transactions, bargains can be found and sometimes they come with unexpected complications. Recently, a buyer had a rather frustrating experience when purchasing a Thule bike rack from a seller who seemed to forget the basic tenets of fair dealings.

The buyer, who goes by the username u/Illilouette_zen, came across a Thule bike rack listed for $150. The seller was described as “pretty abrasive,” but the bike rack itself looked to be in good condition, so the buyer decided to go through with the deal. Transaction made, cash exchanged, and off the buyer went with the hope of enjoying some outdoor cycling adventures.

However, the weekend brought a twist. The seller reached out to the buyer, claiming that he had found additional attachments for the bike rack—specifically, anti-sway cages. This would have been great news, but there was a catch: the seller wanted to charge an additional $20 for these parts, parts he had conveniently forgotten to hand over during the initial sale.

When the buyer received the message, there was a moment of disbelief. “Since they came with the rack, can we just consider them part of the original purchase?” the buyer inquired, likely hoping for a reasonable answer.

Instead, the seller’s response was a firm and somewhat dismissive, “As noted, $20. Which is mostly just for my time and the interruption to my busy day.” This wasn’t just surprising, but also a little infuriating. The buyer had just shelled out $150 and now the seller was asking for extra money for items that should have been included from the start.

Faced with this unusual request, the buyer decided to express his disappointment directly to the seller. “That’s really disappointing, Ian. I found the parts elsewhere, so no need to meet up. I just hope you’ll reflect on this one; charging someone extra to retrieve parts that should have been included in the original sale really goes against the spirit of trust that person-to-person marketplaces rely on,” the buyer communicated, hoping to appeal to some sense of shared ethical responsibility.

But Ian, the seller, was not having it. His reply was sharp and defensive. “Excuse me. You were offered the merchandise for inspection, knew exactly what you were getting, and freely consented to purchase it. You don’t get to demand freebies that were never agreed to, nor consume my valuable personal time without paying for it.”

At that point, the conversation took a turn. The buyer clarified that he wasn’t suggesting any form of deception. “I’m just surprised you’d charge extra for parts that should have come with the rack. In every other transaction I’ve had, if a seller finds something missing after the fact, they just let you know and you come pick it up.”

But Ian’s retort was equally firm, “Yes, but my time still costs money. And don’t forget that includes my time searching my storage unit in Sausalito.” The irony of charging for lost time while neglecting basic customer service didn’t seem to phase him.

Frustrated and realizing that this was going nowhere, the buyer decided it wasn’t worth the hassle. He found the anti-sway cages elsewhere for $40 and opted to leave a review for his experience on Facebook Marketplace, potentially warning future buyers about Ian’s unusual approach to transaction etiquette.

It’s a classic case of a buyer-seller misunderstanding, leaving the buyer feeling let down, while the seller appeared unmoved by the norms of fair trade. While both parties were initially enthusiastic about the transaction, a simple oversight transformed the situation into a rather unpleasant exchange.

Sometimes, the online marketplace can turn a simple purchase into a frustrating experience, casting a shadow on what should be a straightforward transaction.
