Woman in black dress walks toward forest stream

About a year ago, a college student found herself in an unsettling encounter that continues to linger in her mind. Having dealt with her fair share of creeps in the past, this particular incident stood out as both bizarre and disconcerting.

It started on a sunny day when she decided to walk to her local TK Maxx to grab some sunscreen. As someone with sensitive skin, she was cautious about the products she used. Once she arrived at the store, she headed straight for the skincare aisle. With her eyes glued to the labels, she crouched down to examine a Hawaiian Tropic bottle, trying to decipher the ingredients that could potentially irritate her skin.

Just as she was focusing on the fine print, she noticed a man, seemingly in his mid-twenties, standing next to her. He was hunched over and had noticeably dry, peeled skin all over his face. Immediately feeling uneasy, she instinctively took a step back, trying to create some personal space between them.

The man, however, initiated a conversation. He claimed he was looking for lotion recommendations for his cousin, and since she seemed knowledgeable about skincare, he wanted her advice. While still feeling on edge, the student thought maybe he was just anxious about asking for help, so she decided to share some suggestions.

But as she spoke, it became clear that his interest lay elsewhere. He kept staring at her, almost evaluating her, and then abruptly interrupted her with a strange compliment: “I just wanted advice from you, since you have very pretty, smooth skin.” He took a step closer, his gaze intense and focused on her face.

Feeling increasingly uncomfortable, she backed away again and attempted to brush off the compliment by saying she wasn’t the best person to consult on skincare. Instead of taking the hint, he continued, “You just really pretty.” Flustered, she thanked him for the compliment but began scanning the store for staff, hoping someone would intervene.

That’s when he noticed her lanyard, which indicated she was a college student. The next questions came flying out: “So, you must be in college. Around 16, 17? What do you study? Do you live around here?” The barrage of inquiries left her feeling trapped and anxious. She vaguely answered that she was studying something creative, but felt it was best not to disclose too much information, especially not her living situation.

She tried to make her way out of the conversation, saying she had to go. Yet, he simply continued to stare at her, now reaching out as if to touch her shoulder. Panic surged through her at that moment, and without waiting for the contact, she quickly said goodbye and left the aisle, heart racing.

After the experience, she felt unsettled enough to report it to her college. Their response was somewhat reassuring, but limited—offering her a keychain alarm and telling her to reach out if she saw him again. While they meant well, it didn’t completely ease her mind.

In the weeks that followed, she made a concerted effort to avoid TK Maxx altogether. The thought of encountering that man again was enough to keep her away. Even now, she recalls the intensity of his gaze and the way he fixated on her skin, a memory that will remain etched in her mind for a long time.
