It was a typical Tuesday for Jessica when she received a call from her husband, Eric. He was at home, handling some random chores while she was out running errands. The call was brief and perplexing. “You’ll never guess who just asked me for your number,” he said. Jessica felt a slight wave of anxiety wash over her. She had only met the woman once, maybe twice, during her son’s playdates with his friend Sam. The last thing she expected was an unexpected request, especially from someone she barely knew.

After a few moments of tentative silence, Eric revealed that it was Sam’s mom, Linda. Jessica couldn’t help but wonder about the context, but she brushed it off, thinking it might just be some innocent plan involving the kids or perhaps a casual coffee invitation. However, it didn’t take long for the conversation to take a strange turn. Eric continued, “She wants to know if you could drive her to Mexico to get a vehicle for her cousin.”

Jessica felt her jaw drop. “Wait, what?!” she exclaimed, glancing around the store as though someone might overhear her incredulity. “Drive her to Mexico? That’s like a 19-hour drive. What in the world?” She had assumed that her transient exchanges with Linda had merely been pleasantries, not an invitation for an impromptu road trip across international borders.

At that moment, thoughts raced through Jessica’s mind. Who asks someone they barely know to embark on such a demanding journey? In her mind, there was a clear distinction between acquaintances and close friends. While she appreciated Linda for being nice to Sam, this felt way too far out of line. “I mean, does she even know me? What if I can’t get time off work? What if something goes wrong?” She began to spiral into a series of ‘what if’ scenarios.

After hanging up, Jessica found herself mulling over the request for most of the day. It seemed absurd, and the fact that Eric had given her number without asking her first felt like an infringement on her privacy. In the evening, when Eric returned from work, Jessica confronted him about it. “You know, I really don’t think this is okay. I just don’t understand how someone thinks this is a normal ask,” she said, voicing her frustration. Eric, half-amused and half-apologetic, shrugged. “I didn’t think much of it. Maybe it’s just her way of asking for help,” he replied, trying to alleviate her annoyance.

As the days passed, Jess started receiving multiple calls and messages from unknown numbers. Jessica chose to ignore them; she didn’t want to entertain the idea of a road trip with someone she hardly knew, especially for such a peculiar purpose. Were it a friend asking for help, it might have been a different story. But Linda? It was just too much.

Finally, a week later, she received a message from Linda on social media. “Hey! Just checking to see if you received my earlier messages about the trip. I hope you’re considering it!” Jessica felt a mix of irritation and disbelief. Not only was Linda being persistent, but the lack of awareness regarding boundaries was alarming. “I really don’t think this is something I can commit to,” she typed back, trying to be polite but firm. With a virtual sigh of relief, she hit send and went about her day.

As the days turned into weeks, Jessica resumed her normal routine, the bizarre request fading from her mind. She returned to her life, thankful for the peace. However, the next time she bumped into Linda at a school event, she didn’t know whether to roll her eyes or engage in small talk. Linda approached her with a bright smile, as if nothing had happened. “Hey, I was so looking forward to our road trip!” she exclaimed. Jessica forced a smile, feeling awkward as she dodged the situation with a general nod, desperately trying to divert the conversation back to their kids.

The rest of the encounter was filled with awkward pleasantries, and Jessica left feeling conflicted. Was she being unreasonable? Had she misjudged Linda’s friendliness? Regardless, one thing was clear: asking an acquaintance to undertake a road trip halfway across the country was not the norm.

In the end, Jessica couldn’t wrap her head around the situation. Some people had a unique way of approaching relationships, and this just wasn’t the dynamic she was comfortable with. She returned home, thankful to have escaped without needing to make any long drives anytime soon.
