Man in suit holding clipboard talking to woman

This wasn’t someone sneaking around or skipping work.

The employee says they got full approval from both their boss and their boss’s boss before enrolling in a semester-long class. The arrangement was simple.

Two mornings a week, they’d come in two hours late for nine weeks. At first, the company was fine with it. The plan was to make up the missed hours later.

Then the Rules Suddenly Changed

After the class had already started, management came back with a new condition.

They now had to use PTO instead of making up the hours.

Not ideal, but they agreed anyway.

No pushback. No argument.

They adjusted and moved on.

Somehow… It Became a Company-Wide Issue

That’s where things stopped making sense.

What started as a small, approved schedule adjustment turned into something much bigger.

Complaints were filed.

Emails went out across the company.

And eventually, the owner stepped in and called the situation “unacceptable.”

All over… someone taking a class using their own PTO.

Why It Feels So Unfair

The employee says their role isn’t time-sensitive.

They don’t cover phones or customers.

They’re still reachable during class most of the time.

They’ve worked there for seven years with no issues.

And their team?

They don’t care at all.

No one has to cover for them. No one is affected.

On top of that, other roles in the company already have flexible or remote work options.

Which makes the backlash even more confusing.

The Bigger Context

This isn’t just a random class.

They’re working two full-time jobs and trying to build a path to something better.

The class is related to their field and could help them move up within the company.

At least… that was the plan.

Now, they’re reconsidering staying at all.

Why This Story Blew Up

Because it hits a nerve a lot of people recognize.

Doing everything “right” and still getting punished.

They got approval.

They followed the rules.

They even gave up their own PTO.

And somehow, it still turned into a problem.

How People Reacted

Most people were firmly on their side.

“If you’re using PTO… they shouldn’t be making a fuss.”

Others pointed out how strange the situation is overall.

Some commenters also suspected the real issue wasn’t the class at all.

It might be coworkers complaining about “special treatment” or management worrying about losing control.

The Bigger Conversation

This sparked a discussion about workplace culture.

Especially how some companies react when employees try to improve themselves.

Instead of supporting growth, it can be seen as a threat.

And when policies suddenly change after approval, it raises questions about fairness and consistency.

My Take

The biggest red flag isn’t the rule change.

It’s the escalation.

If there was a real issue, it should’ve been handled quietly and directly.

Turning it into a company-wide situation suggests something else is going on.

Politics. Perception. Or someone complaining behind the scenes.

The Question They’re Left With

If a workplace reacts this strongly to you trying to grow…

is it actually a place that wants you to succeed, or just stay exactly where you are?
