Last weekend, a young woman named Jess, 21 years old, achieved a significant milestone in her life by graduating from university with honors. Friends and family members traveled from various parts of the country to celebrate this remarkable achievement. However, there was one notable absence: her mother, who lived out of town and, at the last minute, decided to stay home and watch the ceremony online.

While Jess tried to understand her mother’s decision—especially since her two-year-old brother has autism—she couldn’t shake the feeling of disappointment. It stung to think her mother opted for the convenience of a livestream rather than attending in person to support her daughter on such a momentous day.
After the graduation ceremony, guests returned to Jess’s house to celebrate. Everyone was elated, sharing hugs and taking pictures, yet Jess couldn’t shake the feeling that something was off with her mother. After a brief, emotionless exchange of “I’m proud of you,” the guests slowly departed, leaving Jess alone with her boyfriend. It was then that her mother’s behavior took an unexpected turn.
Once the house was quiet, Jess’s mother abruptly turned her attention to the air filter in the house, raising her voice about needing to replace it. Jess was bewildered. Instead of celebrating her graduation and acknowledging the year of hard work leading up to this moment, her mother was fixated on household chores. Jess had worked diligently to balance school, an internship, and everything else that comes with college life. She had even spent time cleaning the common areas of the house before the celebration, but her private space had fallen by the wayside, as no one was meant to enter that part of the home anyway.
Later that day, Jess and her boyfriend made a two-hour drive to visit her grandmother and relatives. This visit was particularly important to Jess; she had missed the funeral of her uncle due to finals and wanted to reconnect with family. While driving, she texted her mother, sensing that something deeper lingered beneath her mother’s blunt remarks. The text exchange revealed her mother’s feelings of disappointment about the state of Jess’s home.
Her mother expressed her hurt over what she deemed a “dirty, messy, and disgusting” living situation, claiming she “didn’t raise [Jess] to live that way.” Jess attempted to explain her lack of time and energy to maintain the house, but her mother dismissed her reasoning as mere excuses. This stung deeply. For Jess, her graduation felt overshadowed by her mother’s criticisms. It was as though all her hard work and accomplishments had been rendered irrelevant.
As the conversation continued, it took an even more unexpected twist. Her mother revealed plans for the family to move away soon and brought up concerns about Jess’s boyfriend, claiming he “doesn’t really know her.” Jess found herself grasping for clarity as her mother suggested she should have a talk with him about “being a real man.” Additionally, her mother insisted they should get rid of video games, including the PlayStation they enjoyed together.
The very next day was Mother’s Day. Despite feeling hurt and unappreciated, Jess made an effort to show her love and appreciation for her mother. She picked out a small gift—a mug filled with lotion and lip oil—hoping it would brighten her day. When she presented the gift, however, her mother barely acknowledged it. In stark contrast, Jess’s younger sister showered their mother with chocolates and a stuffed bear, prompting an emotional outpouring of gratitude from her mother.
Jess was left feeling confused and drained. It seemed that the praise and recognition she had longed for after her graduation were overshadowed by her mother’s fixation on domestic criticisms. She felt a profound disconnect, as though her accomplishments were dismissed entirely. Instead of celebrating the joy of her graduation, Jess was left with feelings of criticism, disappointment, and emotional exhaustion. The distance between her and her mother felt greater than ever, and after everything that had transpired, Jess wasn’t even sure how to approach her mother again.
