Never thought they would have a story to tell, but here it goes. They work nights at a local hotel, which boasts about 140 rooms. One particularly busy night, a wedding was taking place in-house, making the hotel swamped with guests. Buckling down at the front desk around 1 AM, the last thing they needed was a fire alarm blaring through the lobby. But, of course, that’s exactly what happened.

The piercing sound of the alarm echoed through the halls as they scrambled to manage the chaos. They quickly started calling around—firing off messages to their manager, flipping through emergency protocols, and directing guests out of the hotel. Being the only staff member on shift added to the weight of the situation, and the noise was making it all the more challenging.
Amidst the chaos, the elevator dinged, and out stepped a disgruntled guest—Mr. Boomer. He was visibly irritated, and the look on his face suggested that the last thing he wanted to deal with was a fire alarm.
“What’s going on with the alarm?” he demanded, arms crossed and face twisted in annoyance. They took a deep breath, trying to temper their own rising frustration, and responded, “It’s a fire alarm. You need to leave the building.”
Mr. Boomer reacted as if they’d just insulted him. He scrunched his face up, eyes narrowing, and replied, “No, you need to turn it off.” Confused by his response, they reiterated the urgency of the situation, speaking louder and more firmly. This, of course, only earned them a dirty look in return as he finally trudged outside with Ms. Boomer.
While on the phone with the hotel engineer—who had the keys to essential areas of the building—they couldn’t help but notice Mr. Boomer’s silhouette approaching the entrance again. Heart sinking, they paused their call. “Sir, you cannot be in here,” they said firmly. His reply? “But I’m freezing!”
Slightly incredulous, they had to suppress an eye-roll. Sure, it wasn’t pleasant outside, but there were protocols to follow, and they couldn’t just let guests traipse back into the building during an active fire alarm for the sake of a little chill in the air. “I’m sorry, but you need to stay outside,” they insisted, feeling their patience fraying. “I’m doing everything I can at the moment.”
Mr. Boomer just huffed and left, but not for long. The fire department and engineer arrived shortly after, confirming that there was no fire. Just as they were about to breathe a sigh of relief, Mr. Boomer returned. He walked up with a self-satisfied smirk, ready to deliver his critique.
<p“It took you long enough!” he declared, pointing an accusatory finger. “You should have been helping instead of playing on your phone.”
They stared at him in disbelief, wondering where he’d even gotten that idea. Before they could muster a response, he waddled off, probably in search of some warmth and comfort that they simply couldn’t provide him at that moment.
Some people just couldn’t grasp the gravity of the situation, they thought. The blend of exhaustion and frustration settled heavily on their shoulders, as they dealt with the aftermath of the alarm and the guests left standing outside in the cold. The night felt long, and they still had several hours to go.
What was it with people like Mr. Boomer? Sometimes, the lack of basic understanding in such situations was mind-boggling. And as they resumed their duties once the chaos subsided, they couldn’t help but feel that this ridiculous interaction would stay with them for a while.
