Bad roommates are one thing.

But a bad roommate who ignores every conversation, eats your food, and then acts shocked when you finally leave?

That’s what made this story blow up—because it’s not just about moving out. It’s about how far “common courtesy” should go when someone hasn’t shown you any.

A Year of Frustration

The man (25M) said he’d been living with his roommate, “Jake” (26M), for about a year.

They weren’t friends—just matched online.

And from the beginning, things were off.

According to him, Jake:

  • Never cleaned
  • Ate his food like it was shared
  • Brought people over late into the night (even on weekdays)

He didn’t just stay quiet either. He said he tried to address it calmly multiple times—around five conversations in total.

But every time, Jake brushed it off, saying he was “trippin.”

Nothing changed.

The Exit Plan

Eventually, he found a way out—a small studio apartment he could afford on his own.

So he made a move.

He gave the landlord proper 30-day notice, paid his share of the final month’s rent, and planned his exit.

But here’s the twist:

He didn’t tell his roommate.

Not until the very last moment—when he was literally loading the final box into a moving truck.

The Blow-Up

That’s when Jake found out.

And he lost it.

He started yelling, saying he’d been screwed over and now had to either:

  • Cover the full rent
  • Or scramble to find a new roommate immediately

The poster didn’t budge.

After a year of dealing with the same behavior, he told him it wasn’t his problem anymore.

Where the Doubt Creeps In

Even though he felt justified, his friends weren’t fully on his side.

Some said he should’ve at least given a heads-up so Jake could prepare.

That’s what sparked the debate:

Was this finally setting boundaries…
or was it unnecessary payback?

Why This Blew Up

This story sits right in that messy gray area people love arguing about.

Because technically, he did everything “right”:

  • Gave notice
  • Paid his share
  • Followed the lease

But socially?

That’s where things get complicated.

The question becomes:
Do you still owe someone courtesy… if they never gave you any?

The Internet Was Split

Some people fully backed him.

User icnoevil said, “He was a thief for stealing your food. He deserved what you did.”

Others argued that once respect is gone, so is obligation.

SoothingWafer wrote, “If you had told him, he would have dragged it out… while putting no effort into finding a new roommate.”

But Not Everyone Let Him Off the Hook

A lot of commenters landed somewhere in the middle.

They agreed the roommate was awful—but still felt the move was harsh.

User Realistic_Store9122 summed it up best:
“You were a bit of an asshole to him, but he’s been an asshole to you the whole time.”

Others pointed out that giving a heads-up would’ve cost nothing—and would’ve been the more “mature” move.

The Bigger Takeaway

This isn’t really about rent.

It’s about reciprocity.

When someone consistently ignores your boundaries, at what point do you stop extending courtesy back?

He chose that point.

And while not everyone agrees with how he handled it, most people seemed to agree on one thing:

After a year of being ignored, he didn’t just move out.

He stopped playing nice.
