a woman walking down a road in the desert

This is a story about a minor who experienced something unsettling on their way home from the grocery store. It all began innocently enough, as they made their way back to their neighborhood with a few groceries in hand. The regular sounds of the street surrounded them, but an unusual presence began to loom in the background.

As they walked, the minor noticed a car behind them. It was moving at an agonizingly slow pace. A little hesitant, they brushed it off, thinking it was just another driver navigating the streets. But then the realization hit: the car was keeping a steady distance behind them. No matter how slow the minor walked, the car stayed right there, just a couple of yards back. It wasn’t overtly speeding past or even changing lanes. Just a slow, unnerving chase.

An underlying sense of paranoia crept in. Was the driver simply taking their time, or were they genuinely interested in the minor? As uncertainty filled their mind, they approached a house and decided to momentarily pause in front of it, hoping the car would just pass on by. After all, they were nearly home. But then, to their horror, the driver parked outside the house they stood in front of, and that feeling of unease intensified.

With the car now stationary, the minor felt a glimmer of relief. They took a deep breath and continued walking, assuming that would be the end of it. But that relief was short-lived. The driver suddenly shifted back into reverse, pulling away from the curb and resuming their slow pursuit once again. In that moment, heart racing, the minor quickened their pace as their house came into view.

They spotted a group of neighborhood kids playing ahead, and that sight gave them a flicker of comfort. But, just as they thought they could escape the situation, the driver did something that sent chills down their spine. The middle-aged man in the car turned and looked directly at them, his gaze chillingly intent. In a voice that was muffled by distance, he said something. Whether it was meant to be friendly or threatening, the minor couldn’t tell, but it didn’t matter. Instinct kicked in, and they broke into a sprint, racing the last few yards to their home without glancing back.

Once inside, a wave of anxiety washed over them. What if the man knew where they lived? What if he decided to come looking for them? The thought played on repeat in their mind. Their heart was still pounding, and they couldn’t shake the feeling of dread. It didn’t help that the man had struck them as exceptionally creepy, with deadened eyes that seemed to bore into the soul. The minor’s first instinct was to tell their mom about the encounter. But when they did, the response was dismissive. “Just pray to God,” she said with a casual shrug, which only added to the lingering unease.

As they sat alone, thoughts raced through their mind. This wasn’t just an odd encounter; it felt threatening. The minor knew they hadn’t made the smartest choices during this unsettling experience—memories of the license plate that they hadn’t bothered to notice nagged at them. Why hadn’t they taken it seriously? Now, they were left thinking about future precautions to keep themselves safe. What steps could they take to feel more secure on the streets? The fear of what might happen next was palpable.

As they pondered over their situation, it became clear that this moment was a wake-up call. Being aware of one’s surroundings was essential, and next time they would have to have a plan in case something like this happened again. The absence of a phone was a glaring omission, and they resolved to never leave home without a way to communicate again. But most importantly, they knew they needed tools to feel safe, even if a home security system was far out of reach. This minor experience was anything but minor; it was a lesson learned, albeit in the hardest way possible.
