It was a few years back, but the tension from that summer still lingers for the family at the center of the story. It all began when a 29-year-old woman, who we’ll just call Liv, found herself in yet another childcare crisis. Liv and her husband, both juggling full-time jobs while raising their two young children, ages 4 and 5, were grappling with the constant struggle of finding reliable, affordable babysitting. Their financial situation was tight, and every cent counted.

Liv’s search for dependable childcare was fraught with setbacks. Sitters either moved on to new jobs or faced family emergencies that cut their service short. Even the one excellent babysitter they managed to secure eventually had to bow out due to increased commitments with her own child. Just when it seemed like she might have to give up her job altogether, her mother suggested a solution: Liv’s brother.

At the time, he was 25 and living at home with their mother, unemployed and looking for something to fill his days. Liv figured it could work. She proposed a mutually beneficial arrangement—pay him for watching the kids during specific hours, and she assumed it was clear that pay would reflect the actual time he spent babysitting. They agreed, and Liv held on to the hope that this would finally give her some peace of mind.

For a while, things went relatively smoothly. Sure, Liv’s brother wasn’t the most engaging sitter; he mostly supervised the children from the couch while they played. Sometimes, he’d smoke marijuana after they fell asleep, which made Liv uneasy but not enough to seek an alternative. At least they were safe, she thought.

One day, Liv’s husband came home early from work. Given that their usual childcare arrangement was now moot, they let Liv’s brother go after just a few hours, thinking nothing of it. They promptly paid him for the hours he had worked, which amounted to about half a day’s pay. The couple felt this was fair, given that they were now safely home to take care of the kids.

That’s when things took a turn. Liv began to receive frantic calls from their mother, who revealed that her brother was furious and threatening to stop babysitting entirely. Confused and a bit frustrated, Liv decided to confront him directly. When she arrived at her mother’s house, the conversation quickly became heated.

Liv agreed to pay her brother a full day’s wage for that instance, hoping to smooth things over. But when she told him moving forward that he would only be paid for the hours he worked, he snapped back, “I don’t get up at 7 a.m. for half a day’s pay.” Liv found herself at a loss for words. She replied, “I’m not paying you to wake up. I’m paying you to watch my kids.”

What transpired next was an escalating argument. Liv’s brother became increasingly agitated, declaring he wouldn’t continue babysitting under those conditions. Liv stood her ground, stating they couldn’t afford to pay him for time he wasn’t working. And just like that, she was left without a sitter and had to consider drastic measures.

In the end, Liv decided to leave her job to care for her children herself. The summer months that followed were tough; finances were tighter than ever. Yet, the hardest pill to swallow was the reaction from her family. Rather than support her, Liv started receiving messages from relatives—grandparents and aunts—chastising her for not compensating her brother fairly. It felt unjust to Liv; she tried to explain her side, but it seemed like no one wanted to hear it.

Frustrated and feeling alone, she spoke with her best friend about it, who supported her viewpoint. But Liv knew her friend had a bias, making it hard to gauge the general opinion on her situation.

Even years later, Liv still contemplates whether she was out of line for insisting on paying her brother only for the hours he actually worked. The family drama that ensued left a lasting impression, casting shadows on family bonds that were already frayed.
