Earlier today, a shopper found herself caught in an unexpected and frankly bewildering encounter while grocery shopping. As she was wrapping up her errands, heading towards the checkout, two pre-teen girls, probably around 11 or 12 years old, approached her with a request that set off alarm bells. The girls asked her if she would buy something for them. Naturally, she was hesitant and wanted to know more.

After a bit of back and forth, one of the girls elaborated that it wasn’t really for her, but for a friend, claiming, “I promised her I would get it for her.” The shopper’s gut instinct kicked in—this didn’t sound right. Knowing that such requests often involved something inappropriate, she asked what they wanted her to buy, getting the sense that it was likely alcohol.

She stood firm in her response, saying, “I will not be making any purchase for you that you cannot make for yourself.” This only made the girls more irritable. The main girl pressed her further, asking why she wouldn’t help them out. The shopper explained that if their parents wouldn’t allow them to buy it, then it wasn’t her place to say yes. That’s when she decided it was time to impart a bit of wisdom, suggesting the girl should be more mindful when approaching strangers like she did, and how it can be dangerous.

The situation escalated quickly. The girl, clearly feeling affronted, unleashed a string of insults, calling her a “fat cow” and a “dried up old bitch.” The shopper, at just 24 years old, took offense but tried to shake it off. However, as she turned to walk away, she heard the girl mutter, “She’s probably a dyke too,” which pushed her over the edge. Turning back, she confronted the girl directly, leaning down to be at eye level.

“Little girl,” she said, “you need to go home to your parents right now and tell them they should be disappointed in your behavior. That is NOT how you speak to people.” The girls simply laughed and sauntered off, seemingly unfazed by the confrontation.

After the encounter, the shopper felt conflicted. On one hand, she wondered if she had gone too far with her response. Maybe she should have just ignored the insults and walked away. But on the other hand, she felt that if she didn’t call out the behavior she witnessed, how would things ever change? The whole incident shook her and left her wondering about the current state of kids today. She didn’t have children of her own yet, but if this was typical behavior, it was certainly concerning.

In her mind, she kept reflecting on how some kids appear to grow up without any boundaries or understanding of respect. The harshness of the girl’s words felt out of place, especially from someone so young. It left her pondering what influences might be shaping this generation’s behaviors and attitudes, and whether or not adults should engage with children in these kinds of situations.

Feeling unsettled by the entire episode, she decided to share her experience online, seeking advice and perspectives from others who might have encountered similar situations. Her post quickly garnered attention, with many reading and responding to her dilemma, debating whether she was justified in her reaction or if she had crossed a line herself.

As she reflected further, she couldn’t shake off the feeling of unease. What was happening to the younger generation? Were they really so comfortable spewing insults at strangers? The shopper definitely hoped this wasn’t the norm, and she found herself wishing there was a way to bridge that gap between ages. A simple act of asking for a favor turned into something far more complex, and for her, it raised questions that lingered long after the grocery store lights had dimmed.
