The text over a 13 second Instagram reel from @lifeby.jas reads: “So why did nobody tell me the Cathedral is literally right outside the train station!? I’m awestruck with 5 bags now.” The caption adds, “This was actually so cool but I was not expecting it to be right there at all!” The reel was posted on September 18, 2026. The caption does not name the city, but the building in the footage is the twin towered Gothic cathedral that stands beside Cologne’s main station, and the video is a single continuous walk from the station doors to the plaza.
The clip starts inside the station, looking up through a wall of glass panes at the dark spire of the cathedral while the on screen text sits over the doors. A few seconds in, the camera tilts down to the exit, where several people in high visibility vests stand just outside the glass. Then the creator walks through the doorway and the view opens up.
The second half of the reel is the reveal. Once outside, the camera tilts up the full height of the western facade, with its two pointed towers cutting into a sky of blue and scattered white cloud. Scaffolding covers part of the lower stonework. Visitors cluster on the steps and the plaza in front, and the camera ends on a wide view of the front of the church with people small at its base. There is no narration quoted in the post, so the only words are the on screen text and the caption.
The cathedral’s own website sets the rules for bags. Its visitor notes say only smaller bags and day backpacks up to 40 by 35 by 15 centimeters (height, width, depth) may be brought into the cathedral, the treasury and the tower climb. Roller suitcases, cabin trolleys, hiking backpacks and other large items are not allowed inside those areas, and the page says they cannot be stored there. A traveler walking out of the station with several bags would therefore not be able to take them in.
There is a separate option. In an announcement dated October 8, 2024, the cathedral said a luggage storage container had opened next to its shop on Roncalliplatz, open daily from 10:00 to 18:00, at 3 euros per piece of luggage for up to 2 hours. Hours and prices can change, so check the cathedral’s site for the current terms before planning around it.
The visitor notes also say that visiting the cathedral has been subject to a fee since July 1, 2026. The page does not state the price and points visitors to the cathedral’s ticket page, so the amount is worth checking before the trip rather than assuming the church is free as in earlier years.
The building in the reel has a documented history that explains why it dominates what the creator saw at the doors. UNESCO’s World Heritage listing describes Cologne Cathedral as a High Gothic five aisled basilica about 144.5 meters long, with a tower facade 157.22 meters high. Construction began in 1248 and was completed in 1880 in several stages, and the site was added to the World Heritage List in 1996. The cathedral’s own materials say that when it was finished in 1880 it was one of the largest buildings in the world, and that it remains a working Roman Catholic church that houses the Shrine of the Three Kings.
Before walking out of the station with several bags, check the entry price on the cathedral’s ticket page, since the fee has applied since July 1, 2026. Bags larger than a day backpack cannot go inside, so plan to use the luggage container on Roncalliplatz, and confirm its current hours and prices first.
