It was just another evening for her in Downtown Long Beach, a familiar territory where the sound of laughter and music mingled with the salty breeze from the nearby ocean. The woman had been out, enjoying the night, and was now making her way back to her car parked at the Westin Hotel parking structure. The walk usually took about ten minutes, a pleasant stroll she often enjoyed—especially when dressed up. That night, she had chosen to wear a stylish beige leather dress, paired with flat shoes instead of heels. A last-minute decision that, as fate would have it, would turn out to be crucial.

With her phone in her pocket and her head held high, she began her way back, feeling confident and calm. She usually loved to plug in her headphones and get lost in her music, but for some reason, she had opted to leave them off. Little did she know how vital that choice would become. As she crossed the street, she noticed a man a few years older than her watching her intently. Initially, it felt innocent enough. But then, he crossed halfway into the street shortly before abruptly doubling back to the same block she was on.
Her instincts kicked in as she turned left at the corner, her pace quickening slightly. A knot began to form in her stomach when she glanced back to see the same man, now following her at a distance. Panic set in as she continued walking, trying to maintain a casual demeanor while her heart raced. He was on the same block and definitely not leaving her alone.
Feeling trapped, she attempted to find refuge by ducking into a nearby entrance to a building, but her fingers fumbled through her purse, unable to locate her parking ticket. She would have to keep moving. Each glance back confirmed her fears—he was still there, now closing the distance as she walked faster.
Suddenly, she caught sight of three girls ahead of her, dressed in club attire, chatting animatedly as they headed toward a nearby bar. Without a second thought, she rushed to join them. Safety in numbers, she thought desperately. The four of them, now united, headed toward the bar together, but she couldn’t shake the feeling of being pursued. As her heart raced, she pulled out her phone, dialing the police as they walked. The man had crossed the street directly behind them, still following.
As they approached the crosswalk, the signal changed, and the opportunity arose. In an adrenaline-fueled burst, the group sprinted sideways across, glancing back as they dashed into the bar just in time. “Help!” she yelled, feeling relief wash over her as they all stumbled inside, breathless and terrified. The sense of safety within the bar was palpable, but her heart still raced as she peered out the door, watching the man pass by without a glance, pretending as if nothing had happened.
After a moment of respite in the bar, surrounded by people and noise, she felt the tension in her body begin to subside. The girls she had joined were kind and supportive, sharing their shock and disbelief at what had just transpired. They laughed nervously, exchanging stories, grateful to have each other’s company in that moment. If not for them and her self-awareness, the outcome could have been drastically different.
In the end, she made it home unscathed, but the experience left her shaken. The night that had begun with carefree vibes turned into a chilling reminder of the dangers that lurked in unexpected places. She couldn’t shake the feeling of vulnerability that night; however, she also felt an overwhelming sense of gratitude for the choices she made and the strangers who became allies.
No one should feel unsafe in a familiar place, but as she learned that night, sometimes intuition is the strongest weapon we have. Trusting her instincts and the fortunate circumstances of that evening helped her avoid what could have been a far more sinister encounter.
