It was a sweltering Saturday afternoon when a young couple, Jess and Mike, found themselves lounging in their small living room. The sunlight streamed through the windows, its warmth tangible, and the air conditioning struggled to keep up with the oppressive heat outside. As they flipped through Netflix for yet another movie to watch, they kept glancing out the window at the shimmering blue water of their elderly neighbors’ pool. The couple next door, Harold and Marjorie, were known for their well-maintained yard and pristine pool, yet it was a rare sight to see anyone actually swimming in it.

“Look at that pool,” Mike said, shifting uncomfortably in his seat. “They never use it. I mean, we haven’t seen anyone in there all spring.”
Jess nodded, her brow furrowing in thought. “I know, right? It’s just sitting there, and we’re dying in this heat! What if…?”
Mike shot her a quizzical look, already suspecting where this was going. “No way we’re asking to use it, Jess. That would be so weird.”
“Why not? It’s practically a community resource at this point! They could be having so much fun, and we’d only be asking to borrow it a few times.”
“But what if they don’t want us in their pool? What if it feels like we’re invading their space?” Mike countered, rubbing the back of his neck nervously. The anxiety of the potential awkwardness was palpable in the room.
Despite her reservations, Jess couldn’t shake the idea. The thought of lounging by the pool, sipping cold drinks while the sun sparkled off the water was too enticing to resist. “Look, we could even help them with yard work or anything else they might need. It’d be a fair trade, right?”
Mike sighed, recognizing that Jess was already becoming convinced of their plan. “Alright, but let’s consider this carefully. How do we even approach them without it being super awkward? We don’t want to seem like those neighbors who just take, take, take.”
The conversation lingered in the air for a few days. Each time they walked past Harold and Marjorie’s backyard, they would glance at the pool, its inviting waters seeming to mock them in their stifling apartment. Eventually, the heat became too much to bear. On a particularly brutal Thursday afternoon, Jess finally made the decision for them.
“I’m going to do it,” she declared with a determined look in her eyes. “Wish me luck!”
Before Mike could think twice, Jess marched over to the fence and knocked on their back door. The sound echoed with the intensity of her racing heart. Minutes felt like hours as she waited, glancing back to Mike, who was anxiously watching from their porch.
Finally, the door creaked open, and there stood Marjorie, a warm smile lighting up her face. “Well, hello there!”
“Hi, Marjorie! I hope you’re doing well. I wanted to ask you something…” Jess began, her voice wavering but determined. She quickly explained their situation, how they had noticed the pool rarely being used, and how they were sweltering in their apartment.
What followed was a conversation fraught with slight hesitations and careful phrasing. Marjorie listened intently, her smile never wavering but her brow slightly furrowing in thought. “I appreciate you asking and not just showing up one day,” she said after a moment, her voice warm yet cautious. “Harold takes such pride in keeping the pool up, but we haven’t really thought about sharing it.”
Jess felt her stomach drop as she awaited Marjorie’s response. “But I think it’s a wonderful idea, actually,” Marjorie continued. “You’re welcome to use it, just please treat it well and let us know. Harold would love to have some company!”
Jess could hardly contain her excitement, thanking Marjorie profusely as she practically skipped back to Mike, who was waiting with wide eyes. “She said yes!”
For the next few weeks, Jess and Mike found themselves enjoying the unexpected luxury of the pool. They brought cold drinks, floated on pool noodles, and even invited the elderly couple over to join them a few times. Harold would occasionally share stories from the neighborhood, and Jess and Mike would lend a hand with yard work, just as they promised.
As the summer progressed, their dynamic shifted from neighbors to friends. While Jess and Mike had initially worried about being the “weird” neighbors for asking to use the pool, they found that their request led to a blossoming friendship, one that they had not anticipated but came to cherish deeply.
And as it turned out, asking for a favor wasn’t so weird after all.
