There is something special about a small town where folks wave from the porch and the pace slows down. If your travel plans now favor charming main streets over crowded big city sidewalks, you are in luck. Travel + Leisure recently named its best small towns for 2026, choosing places with fewer than 30,000 full time residents that, in its words, “excel in its category and offer a variety of activities, accommodations, and a timely reason to visit,” according to Luxury Travel Magazine. We have paired those winners with a top pick from U.S. News and World Report. Here are eight small towns that travelers and editors have been praising.

1. Bar Harbor in Maine
Bar Harbor tops the list from U.S. News and World Report. The magazine ranked it the best small town to visit in the country for the fifth year in a row, as reported by The Boston Globe and WABI. U.S. News defines these small towns as places with a population of less than 50,000.
The reports we read did not explain why Bar Harbor keeps winning, so we will not guess at the details. What we can tell you is that it has held the top spot among 25 destinations on that list for years, which suggests plenty of travelers keep coming back. If you are planning a trip to the Maine coast, check the best time of year for the weather you prefer, book lodging early and look up current information on the area’s attractions before you go. A little planning goes a long way in a popular town.
2. Pismo Beach in California
Travel + Leisure named Pismo Beach its Best Small Beach Town for 2026, as listed by Luxury Travel Magazine. According to International Traveller, the magazine cited a growing dining scene, upscale new accommodations and improved rail access.
That report mentions a classic California feel with dramatic bluffs and a mellow, nostalgic mood. It also names the new Pacific Point Resort, a 170 room cliffside hotel, and a restaurant called Westerly Shell Beach, along with a long running seafood spot, Oyster Loft. An expanded Amtrak Pacific Surfliner schedule added a daily round trip, which makes the trip easier if you would rather skip the long drive. There is also a monarch butterfly grove where thousands of butterflies spend the winter from November to February. That is a gentle, lovely outing for any age.
3. Hood River in Oregon
Hood River, Oregon, was named Travel + Leisure’s Best Small Mountain Town, according to KATU. The station reports that the town offers hiking and biking in the Columbia River Gorge, skiing on Mount Hood, and windsurfing and kiteboarding on the river.
You do not need to be an athlete to enjoy it. KATU also notes a lively arts scene, solid lodging and valley orchards that supply local fruit, along with well regarded restaurants, breweries, cideries and wineries. Katie Kadlub, CEO of Visit Hood River, said visitors often arrive for the mountains or the river, then discover the town’s creative community and local food. Hood River also appears at No. 23 on U.S. News and World Report’s small town list, per WABI. A slow afternoon of tasting local fruit and strolling downtown sounds like a fine vacation.
4. Laconia in New Hampshire
Laconia earned the title of Best Small Lake Town from Travel + Leisure, according to Luxury Travel Magazine. Boston.com describes it as a small city on the northeast side of Lake Winnipesaukee, drawing summer boaters and beachgoers.
If your idea of a perfect trip involves sitting by the water with a good book and a cold drink, a lake town may suit you better than a busy seaside resort. New Hampshire summers are popular, so it is wise to book lodging early and ask about boat tours or shoreline spots that fit your comfort level. Fall can be another lovely time to visit for the changing leaves, though we recommend checking current local information for what is open. The charm of a lake town is the unhurried pace, so leave a little room in your schedule for doing nothing at all.
5. Mystic in Connecticut
Mystic, Connecticut, won the Best Small Food Town award from Travel + Leisure, as listed by Luxury Travel Magazine. Boston.com describes it as a historic maritime village split between Groton and Stonington in southeastern Connecticut, and quotes the magazine saying the town is “overflowing with award-winning chefs, imaginative bartenders” and other food industry talent.
For folks who plan trips around meals, that is a promising sign. A seaside village with a seafaring past gives you plenty of pleasant ways to spend a day, from strolling near the water to settling in for a long, leisurely lunch. Because food towns can fill up on weekends, you may want to reserve a table ahead of time and ask your hotel for recent suggestions. Mystic also appears on the USA Today 10Best coastal small town list mentioned in WBTW, which tells us it has been a favorite for some time.
6. Truth or Consequences in New Mexico
Travel + Leisure picked Truth or Consequences as its Best Small Spa and Wellness Town, per Luxury Travel Magazine. Islands explains that the town was originally called Hot Springs because of its many naturally warm pools, and that today the springs make it “an oasis of healing in the New Mexico desert.”
The same report mentions Riverbend Hot Springs, which offers open air pools filled with mineral rich water, and Sierra Grande Lodge and Spa for spa services. The town sits about 150 miles south of Albuquerque, so it is an easy road trip from the state’s main airport. It was renamed in 1950 to mark the tenth anniversary of the radio game show Truth or Consequences, a fun bit of trivia to share with your travel companions. If aching joints could use a soak, this may be the quiet getaway you have been hoping for.
7. Georgetown in South Carolina
Georgetown, South Carolina, was named Best Small Retirement Town by Travel + Leisure, as listed by Luxury Travel Magazine. A press release covered by WBTW describes it as a waterfront city of about 9,000 residents and the third oldest city in South Carolina.
That report notes that visitors can shop, dine and see sites such as the Kaminski House and the Rice Museum, and that Historic Front Street overlooks the Sampit River. In 2018, USA Today 10Best readers voted Georgetown America’s best coastal small town, according to the same report, which was a press release and so reflects the area’s own view. Georgetown is one of five communities in the Hammock Coast region. If you are curious about retirement life near the water, a long weekend here could help you picture it.
8. Oxford in Mississippi
Oxford, Mississippi, is Travel + Leisure’s Best Small College Town for 2026, per Luxury Travel Magazine. It is home to the University of Mississippi, known as Ole Miss, which has been the state’s flagship university since 1848, as Hotty Toddy describes in an earlier Travel + Leisure honor from 2014.
At that time the magazine said, “Oxford is as passionate about literature as it is about sports playbooks.” The same report describes a town of about 20,000 residents, famous for tailgating, that has been home to writers including William Faulkner and John Grisham. It also says Oxford has kept its college spirit while remaining a good place to raise a family or retire. Book lovers may enjoy the literary history, while sports fans can plan around a game day. Either way, a college town often offers good food and friendly conversation.
