Teen girl standing confidently on city street near bus, capturing urban life essence.

C was an 18-year-old navigating the complexities of adolescence, family dynamics, and her own identity. Recently diagnosed with level 1 autism, she often felt like an outsider, even within her own large, but distant family. The only bright spot in her life was her cousin G, who had always been more like a brother than a relative. They shared countless memories, including lazy afternoons spent playing video games and a deep bond that transcended familial ties.

However, their closeness was constantly threatened by G’s mother, P. A notoriously homophobic figure in the family, P had always tried to keep C and G apart, fearing that their bond would somehow lead to trouble. C often brushed off her disdain, chalking it up to her family’s complicated views on sexuality. It wasn’t until C came out as bisexual, accidentally outed by her supportive parents, that P’s true colors began to bleed through the cracks.

Every family gathering turned into a battleground for P, who lashed out with insults masked as “advice.” She waged a relentless campaign of emotional assault against C, criticizing her appearance and questioning her life choices. Despite C’s attempts to laugh it off, it began to take a toll—not just on her, but on G, who would often leave the room when P started her rants. C could see how deeply uncomfortable her cousin had become, and it tore at her heart. But P seemed to thrive on tearing others down, a habit honed over years.

Fast forward to a particularly tense family BBQ. G was supposed to be there early but was mysteriously absent. C began to worry when she heard P’s voice rise above the crowd, her words directed right at her. “You little piece of shit!” was just the beginning of a tirade that would spiral into chaos. C barely had time to process what was happening before P was shouting about how she had called the police and that C was no longer allowed to see G. The onlookers were left stunned; C stood there dumbfounded, trying to comprehend the sheer absurdity of the accusation.

For the next few minutes, C was stuck in a surreal nightmare. P continued her rant, accusing C of “turning” her son gay, as if G’s identity rested solely on C’s influence. The familial tension reached a boiling point, and the air was thick with disbelief. C’s dad stepped in, trying to diffuse the situation while P continued to hurl insults. Finally, when the moment became too unbearable, C snapped, unleashing a flurry of pent-up frustration on P.

“Oh, go fuck yourself! He’s an adult, and I’m going to see him no matter what!” C shouted, her voice breaking the heavy silence. P, furious and caught off guard, lunged at C and landed a punch squarely on her face—a moment of physical violence that left everyone in shock. C stumbled back, pain radiating from her cheek, tears pooling in her eyes not just from the impact but from the flood of emotions washing over her.

After the punch, chaos erupted as C’s family pulled P away, and her mom whisked her into the kitchen to assess the damage. The bruise was emerging beneath her skin, but what stung more was the revelation of G’s hidden life—something she had been blissfully unaware of until now. As C processed the fact that G was dating someone, she felt a mixture of betrayal and worry. Why hadn’t he told her? Why was he hiding something so significant?

Days passed without interaction between C and G, only to culminate in a notification from him that read simply, “yo.” The normalcy of their banter felt like a façade, masking the chaos that had transpired. When they eventually spoke, G revealed the truth behind the photos that had ignited P’s wrath: he had been exploring his feelings for a guy he met at a party, and it blossomed more than he had anticipated. But he never shared any of this with C, as if he was trying to protect her from something that ultimately involved them both.

The conversation turned tense as C probed for answers. G finally admitted that he hadn’t told her because he thought he was helping her get closer to another guy—a friend of a friend—when in reality, he was falling for someone else entirely. The weight of it all felt too much. P’s aggression was one thing, but G’s silence felt like a betrayal.

Ultimately, as C grappled with her emotions, she tried to figure out how to support G while navigating her own pain and anger. The violence from P would not be forgotten easily, but confronting it head-on felt like a daunting task. She debated whether to report her aunt and protect herself, but at what cost to G? He was already caught in the crossfire and needed support, not more conflict.

C decided to take a step back and contemplate her next moves. As disheartening as the situation was, she knew she needed to approach it strategically, ensuring G was okay before making any noise about P’s actions. Life was complicated, but her priorities had never been clearer—support G, stand firm in her identity, and navigate a family that had suddenly become a war zone.
