About a month and a half ago, a nineteen-year-old guy, whom we’ll call “Tyler”, was set up by a childhood friend named “Sara”. Tyler and Sara had been friends since middle school and had now reunited at college. Sara’s plan was to help her friend A, also nineteen, who was struggling with dating apps and seemed to keep attracting the wrong kind of guys. Tyler thought this was an intriguing proposition and was curious about this new girl, A.

After exchanging social media details, Tyler and A quickly hit it off. They arranged their first date and decided to see each other once or twice a week for the next month. Things seemed to be going well; A even gave Tyler her phone number after their second outing, which felt like a good sign. They were sharing their lives, texting, and catching up over calls and Facetime.
However, what Tyler stumbled upon one night would change everything. While scrolling through TikTok, A’s account popped up as a suggested profile. Intrigued but admittedly cautious, he decided to check it out while turning off his profile views. This choice proved to be a big mistake.
To Tyler’s surprise, A was active on TikTok, posting multiple videos on a daily basis. Her content varied from makeup tutorials to lip-syncing to popular songs. Tyler was beginning to think she was cute and genuinely charming until he reached a video that made his heart drop. The caption read: “When ur going on a date and his height starts with 5,” paired with a video of A lip-syncing to a song that poked fun at “short munchkins.” The timing was uncanny, as it was posted the very night of their second date, and A was wearing the exact same dress as she had that evening.
Feelings of confusion and disappointment flooded Tyler’s mind. Why would A go out with him if she didn’t find him attractive? Was this some kind of cruel joke? He considered that perhaps Sara had pressured A into this, as she could be a bit pushy with her ideas. But Tyler couldn’t shake the feeling that A was making a fool out of him. Did she think he was a joke?
After contemplating his next steps, Tyler decided to cancel their upcoming date. He told A—a complete lie about his brother having an emergency that required him to babysit. The weekend passed, and despite A’s attempts to reach out, Tyler avoided her messages and even rejected her Facetime call by claiming he was tired.
Now, the real dilemma was brewing in Tyler’s mind. Should he confront A about the TikTok video directly? Or would it be better to just cut ties altogether, including with Sara, who had set this whole situation into motion? He found himself leaning more toward viewing this as a prank rather than a misunderstanding. After all, it seemed utterly bizarre that someone would post such content while actively dating someone else.
In the days that followed, Tyler felt the weight of his decision pressing down on him. The confusion over whether A’s intentions were genuine lingered like a bad taste in his mouth. He was angry, hurt, and entirely unsure of how to move forward. Should he address the TikTok situation outright and risk escalating things, or quietly cut his losses and avoid further confrontation?
The situation hung over him, and he couldn’t escape the thought that what was initially a budding romance might have just been a facade, a setup for a joke he was entirely unaware of. As he struggled with his feelings, the specter of misunderstanding loomed larger than ever.
