In a typical high school weight lifting class, you’d expect a certain level of camaraderie among students and patience from the coach. For 16-year-old Jamie, this was usually the case. He generally enjoyed the class, and his coach, who he thought was pretty laid back, often created an environment that encouraged students to push themselves while also allowing for some downtime when needed. However, one fateful day, everything changed.

It had been a grueling session, and Jamie had put in a solid effort. He finished his workout, feeling both exhausted and accomplished. He was about to head into his next activity—some additional lifts he liked to do for personal improvement—when he thought he’d ask the coach for a quick break. Five minutes was all he was looking for, just to catch his breath and regroup.

“Hey coach, can I take a five-minute break?” Jamie asked, hoping to rest his muscles a bit. It felt reasonable, considering he had just wrapped up an intense workout. But to his surprise, the coach’s demeanor shifted dramatically.

The coach looked at Jamie, a frown creasing his brow. “Are you done? Hurry up and get on with your extra stuff,” he snapped. Jamie was taken aback. This was not the coach he had come to know. Normally, responses like this were unheard of and felt completely out of character for him.

Feeling cornered and caught off guard, Jamie nodded, trying to comply with the request. As he moved to start his extra stuff, he found himself mumbled a few words under his breath. In his mind, it was just an expression of his discomfort with the sudden hostility. However, his coach’s eyes widened, and he lunged at Jamie with rapid-fire anger.

<p“What did you say? You think you can just be lazy and disrespectful in my class? You need to learn some respect!” he yelled, his voice echoing through the gym. Jamie’s heart sank. The words stung, much more than the weights he had been lifting moments before. He had always respected his coach and the class; he didn’t think asking for a brief pause warranted such a reaction.

As the coach continued to berate him, Jamie looked around the gym. To his surprise, there were at least five other students lounging around, some of whom hadn’t even touched the weights in the last few sets. There was also a girl sitting off to the side, who had been completely disengaged during the class. Yet here he was, the only one being called out. The unfairness of the situation baffled him.

“It’s not like I’m the only one slacking off,” Jamie thought to himself, frustration bubbling inside him. But he chose to keep quiet, not wanting to provoke the coach further. It was clear that rational discussion was off the table at that moment. Instead, he simply gathered his belongings and moved to the far side of the gym to finish his workout in peace.

As the class continued, Jamie felt a mix of confusion and disappointment. Why had the coach reacted that way? It felt so out of character for him. After class ended, Jamie’s friends approached him, echoing his sentiments. They agreed that the coach’s reaction was over the top and unfair, especially since he usually was so easygoing. Even others in the class had noticed the tension, whispering among themselves about how bizarre the whole exchange was.

Before they left the weight room, Jamie sought out the coach one last time. Despite everything, he thought it was crucial to clear the air. “Coach, I don’t know why you yelled at me earlier. I thought we could take breaks after our workouts,” he said cautiously, hoping for some understanding. The coach’s face remained stern but finally softened just enough for Jamie to see a flicker of regret. However, that was it. He didn’t offer an apology or explanation, merely turned away and walked to another part of the gym.

That day left Jamie puzzled and more than a little hurt. He didn’t consider himself a lazy or disrespectful kid; he was just trying to listen to his body and take a moment. He wondered if the change in the coach’s behavior was due to stress or if something else was affecting his mood.

In the end, as Jamie and his friends left the gym, he took a deep breath, determined not to let the encounter ruin his love for lifting. But he couldn’t shake the feeling that something significant had shifted in his relationship with the coach.
