It all started out like a normal summer for Mia and her friends. They had planned a weekend getaway to the beach, an opportunity to unwind and reconnect after a stressful school year. However, the vacation was marred by troubling events that spiraled beyond their control. Mia had spent the last several months supporting her friend, Jess, who had recently broken up with her wealthy boyfriend. The breakup had hit Jess hard, and she had confided in Mia about her fears, worries, and doubts—everything from finances to her self-worth. But when Jess suddenly vanished, Mia felt an unsettling weight settle in her chest.

After the breakup, Jess had been distant. At first, Mia chalked it up to heartbreak; it made sense that Jess needed time to heal. But when Jess completely stopped returning texts and calls, Mia’s concern intensified. It wasn’t like Jess to fall off the grid, especially after confiding so much in her about everything. To make matters worse, Jess’s ex-boyfriend had immediately left town on a “business trip,” which Mia found suspicious. The timing felt like more than just a coincidence, especially when considering Jess’s past.

Years earlier, Jess had a traumatic experience when her mother dated a toxic individual who had a tumultuous relationship with the law. During that time, Jess had run away from home for a brief period, and the memory haunted Mia. Once again, Mia found herself feeling helpless, trapped in a cycle of worry that she couldn’t seem to break free from. When she reached out to the police for help, they brushed her concerns aside, treating it as a case of a young woman choosing to take a break from her life. Mia felt infuriated—they didn’t know Jess like she did. This wasn’t just a phase; this was a cry for help.

While waiting for any news, the other friend going on the trip, Lucy, had her own problems to deal with. Her brother was embroiled in a legal scuffle after an incident at a bar, which made everyone feel like there was tension hanging in the air. Both Mia and Lucy were supposed to be the lighthearted ones in the group, planning fun activities and silly excursions. Instead, they were enveloped in a grim reality that threatened to overshadow their plans. When Mia finally broke down and discussed her feelings with her family, they didn’t understand the urgency of her concerns. They suggested she just give Jess time and let the police do their jobs. But Mia couldn’t sit and wait; she needed to take action.

Desperation pushed her to confront Jess’s ex-boyfriend when he returned from his business trip. When Mia finally caught up with him, his demeanor was calm, almost too calm, and that only heightened her suspicions. He claimed he had no idea where Jess had gone and insisted she was merely looking for a break. But Mia wasn’t buying it. The way he smiled while dodging questions felt off. There was something unsettling about how he carried himself, as if he knew more than he let on. She pressed, asking him why he hadn’t reached out to the police, but he shrugged it off, stating it was just a “misunderstanding.”

Feeling more lost than ever, Mia decided to take matters into her own hands. She began combing through Jess’s social media for any clues about her whereabouts. To her surprise, she stumbled upon a photo Jess had posted a few days before she vanished. It was innocuous enough—a snapshot of her sitting on a beach, laughing with someone Mia didn’t recognize. Her heart raced as she noticed the boat in the background, a distinct design she recognized from the yacht club where Jess’s ex-boyfriend often hosted parties. This only deepened Mia’s conviction that something was wrong.

Overwhelmed and determined to find out the truth, Mia confided in Lucy, who agreed to help her investigate the yacht club. Together, they visited the club under the guise of wanting to join and casually asked about the boats and people who frequent the area. While chatting up the staff, Mia dropped Jess’s name, trying to glean information. One of the waitstaff casually mentioned seeing Jess with the ex on the yacht a few nights back, their conversation joyful and carefree.

That was it; Mia’s instincts kicked into high gear. She had to confront Jess again, even if it meant facing the ex-boyfriend. The thought of her friend being manipulated or coerced sent shivers down her spine. The trip was beginning to feel less like a getaway and more like a rescue mission. But how would she approach Jess now, given the information she had? And could she trust Jess’s ex-boyfriend to let her get near her?

Mia felt like a whirlwind of anxiety as she prepared for the coming days. Frustration simmered as she realized how out of control everything felt. But deep down, she knew she owed it to Jess to fight for her—because any real friend would do the same.
