In a recent post on Reddit’s AITA (Am I The A**hole) subreddit, a mother described her struggle with balancing her toddler’s medical needs and family expectations, particularly surrounding a special occasion. The post sparked a lively discussion as she explained her decision to not send their nearly 2-year-old son to visit her mother-in-law for Mother’s Day.

Her son had undergone an ileostomy reversal just a month prior, a surgery that went well but came with unexpected complications. The surgery had left him with frequent bowel movements—roughly every 10-15 minutes. This situation was exacerbated by the fact that he had never used his rectum before, leading to severe diaper rash from the constant exposure to stool. Up until a week before the post, his skin had been in a horrible state, but the mother had devised a system that managed to clear most of the rash. Now, her focus was on timely diaper changes and ensuring he kept up with his diet—if he went for more than two hours without eating, he would suffer terrible diarrhea.

Her in-laws were keen for their grandson to visit for Mother’s Day celebrations, especially since they hadn’t seen him in over a month. However, the mother had serious reservations. The long car ride would require multiple stops to change him, and she was concerned about all the supplies they would need to bring. Not to mention, her son had never eaten at his grandmother’s house, making the scenario even more complicated.

The mother expressed that the house would likely not be a good setting for her son, especially if he needed constant attention due to his condition. “Sometimes, when he goes, he screams in pain,” she wrote, which made the idea of navigating family dynamics while managing his discomfort pretty daunting. She feared that her in-laws would try to intervene, despite being unable to alleviate his pain. Dining out would present even more challenges in a louder, crowded environment.

Her husband believed the little one’s condition had improved, attributing it to the clearing up of his rash. He thought it was a good time to start going out again, but the mother strongly disagreed. She explained to him that while nighttime changes had reduced, daytime issues remained chaotic. Yet her husband’s perspective was limited because he could only see their son’s progress at night, leading to misunderstandings about the level of care required during the day.

In an attempt to appease her in-laws, she invited them to visit their home instead, which would alleviate many issues, but they refused. This left her feeling unsupported and disheartened. She told them that if they truly wanted to see her son, they needed to come to her. “If they really wanted to see our son, they would suck it up and come here,” she stated, feeling resolute in her stance.

In an update later shared, the mother elaborated on the situation. She made a point to clarify that her husband was often at work, making it difficult for him to participate actively in the toddler’s care. This reliance on her for the day-to-day management of their child’s condition was a source of stress for her. Additionally, the expense of supplies was a constant burden, which further complicated their financial situation. With insurance covering little of what they needed, their savings had dwindled drastically after their son’s surgery and care.

Mother’s Day ultimately rolled around, and her husband did take the chance to understand her position better by spending the day at home with their son. He witnessed firsthand the extensive care that was required and realized why a visit to his family was not feasible. Though he separated from them to visit for a short time later, the day was ultimately hers, leaving her feeling more empowered. They enjoyed a much-needed break together, which was a welcome change.

Despite the ongoing struggles with her in-laws, the mother remained committed to prioritizing her child’s health and well-being. She ended her update by expressing gratitude for the support she received from the community, emphasizing her love for her son and the continuous battle they faced regarding his care.
