So, there’s this girl named Emily (19) who found herself in a tangled web of relationships and friendships after a pretty dramatic breakup with her boyfriend, Jackson (19). They dated for about four months, mostly because they were part of the same friend group and wanted to give dating a shot. However, after three months of casual bliss, they decided to part ways, and that’s where things started to get messy.

Despite the breakup, Emily and Jackson tried to keep things civil because they still had mutual friends who didn’t want to pick sides. But Jackson took that civility and threw it out the window when he started dating Emily’s best friend, Sarah (let’s call her that), almost immediately after their split. To make matters worse, Jackson and Sarah decided to keep their relationship a secret from Emily, who ended up hearing whispers about their hook-ups from other friends in the group.

With her trust shattered and feeling betrayed, Emily distanced herself from both Jackson and Sarah. What made the situation even worse was that they started trashing her to other friends, which left Emily feeling isolated and upset. Things took an unexpected turn when a mutual friend introduced Emily to Mark, another guy in their circle who was also friends with Jackson.

Emily and Mark hit it off pretty well, and she found herself feeling more comfortable around him than she ever had with Jackson. Slowly but surely, they started hanging out more, and it became clear that there was a genuine connection forming. Emily and Mark even began discussing the possibility of dating, something that made Emily feel excited for the first time since her breakup.

However, the lingering question remained: was it okay for her to date her ex’s friend? Even though Jackson had moved on with Sarah, the thought of dating someone close to him still made Emily a little uneasy. After some contemplation, she decided to tap into the Reddit community for advice and posted her dilemma under the title: “AITJ for dating my ex’s friend?”

Before she knew it, the post gathered attention, with people chiming in and offering their two cents on the situation. Most users seemed to agree that Jackson had lost all rights to be upset since he had not only betrayed Emily by hooking up with her best friend but also acted disrespectfully after their breakup.

But, just when Emily thought she could reflect on the situation in peace, Jackson somehow stumbled upon her Reddit post. It didn’t take long for him to fire off a text, asking if the story was about him. Emily, feeling a mix of defiance and anxiety, admitted that it was. She had hoped to keep things under wraps a little longer, but fate had other plans.

Jackson’s reaction was explosive. He was furious that Emily had aired their dirty laundry on the internet, especially considering the fact that he had hooked up with Sarah while still dating Emily. Emily wasn’t particularly concerned about Jackson’s feelings; she felt that this was just karma coming back around for the way he treated her. She figured if he was mad, it was probably because he knew he had acted poorly, and she was tired of feeling guilty about it.

As for Mark, he had been anxiously waiting to hear how the Reddit post fared. When Emily eventually sent him the link to her post and the ensuing drama, he was relieved. It reassured him about their growing connection. They both discussed the situation and mutually agreed that they didn’t want Jackson’s feelings to dictate their budding relationship.

Emily and Mark decided to take things slow for the time being. They were officially “talking,” and while they hadn’t labeled their relationship as dating yet, both were clearly on the same page about wanting to pursue something more serious in the future. It felt like a new beginning for Emily, free from the shadows of her past relationship with Jackson.

At the end of the day, Emily knew she had to prioritize her happiness over anyone else’s expectations, especially when it involved people who had disrespected her. And quite frankly, she was looking forward to seeing where her connection with Mark would lead, drama be damned.
