In a quaint suburban neighborhood, a young man named Alex found himself in a rather peculiar dispute with his mother, Karen, and her partner, Mike. At 30 years old, Alex had always enjoyed a close relationship with his mother, but recently, a bizarre disagreement began to strain their bond. It all revolved around what might just be the most unusual household product: a so-called “silent” animal deterrent.

It started on a Saturday afternoon when Alex visited his mom’s house to enjoy some family time. As he settled onto the couch, he couldn’t help but notice a strange high-pitched sound echoing through the walls. It was faint but persistent, and it made his ears ring uncomfortably. After about a minute of listening, he casually asked, “What’s that noise?”
“What noise?” Karen replied, looking slightly puzzled.
“You know, that high-pitched sound. It’s kind of annoying.”
Mike chimed in, “Dude, there’s nothing. Must be something outside.” He shrugged it off, as if Alex’s request for clarification was a minor inconvenience. But Alex was certain it was coming from their house. He pressed on, pointing out how distracting it was, only to be met with laughter. Karen and Mike insisted that there was absolutely no noise.
It was at this point that Karen excitedly revealed to Alex that she had just bought an ultrasonic animal deterrent to keep pesky critters from invading her garden. “It’s silent! You can’t hear it,” she said, brushing her hand dismissively in the air.
“Well, I can hear it,” Alex insisted. “How can you not hear that?” The disagreement turned into a back-and-forth, with Karen and Mike insisting that because the device was “silent” to human ears, Alex must be imagining the sound. He felt like he was in some strange episode of a sitcom, where reality and absurdity blurred together.
Determined to prove his point, Alex began to conduct an impromptu experiment. He took out his phone and opened a sound meter app, placing it against the wall to measure the frequency. “See? It’s picking something up!” he exclaimed. But his mom and Mike were still unconvinced. They watched him with bemusement, seemingly finding the whole situation amusing rather than concerning.
“It’s just one of those things,” Mike laughed. “You’re probably just more sensitive to that sort of thing.”
“Sensitive? I’m not sensitive! It’s annoying!” Alex shot back. The more he tried to explain how bothersome he found it, the more they resisted acknowledging the problem.
Days turned into weeks, and the sound continued to haunt Alex whenever he visited. He would often find himself pacing around the house, frustrated that no one else seemed to recognize the issue. He even invited a couple of friends to come over to see if they could hear it, which they did. They shared his discomfort and validated his experience, but Karen and Mike remained unshaken. “It must just be you guys,” Karen said with a wry smile, dismissing their concerns as if they were all in on some elaborate prank.
Eventually, Alex decided to take matters into his own hands. He started looking into reducing the noise himself. He considered muffling it with soundproofing materials, but that felt extreme. He simply wanted a compromise where he could enjoy spending time with his mom without the constant annoyance of the high-pitched sound.
It was becoming clear that this wasn’t just about the sound anymore; it had morphed into a strange battle of wills. Alex wondered if this was a generational thing. Did his mom’s and Mike’s confidence in their perception create a barrier to their understanding? Could they truly not hear the sound that had begun to feel like a part of his very existence?
As the situation persisted, Alex realized he would have to come to terms with the fact that he may never be able to convince them they were hearing something different. Maybe it was the fault of the ultrasonic device, or maybe it was just the way their bodies processed sound. But for now, he resigned himself to living with the audio annoyance and navigating the strange dynamic it created with his family.
In the end, Alex recognized that he could only control how he responded to the situation. He could only hope that one day, they might hear the sound he had grown so accustomed to, and they would all have a good laugh about it—if only to acknowledge the absurdity of the whole thing.
