It all began on a scorching summer day when a teenager found herself wrestling with the discomfort of a fever. At just 16 years old, Alex was no stranger to the fluctuations of her health, but this time was different. She had a 100.7*F fever and felt like she was melting away in her own skin. With sweat dripping down her forehead, the heat in her room was unbearable—not to mention that it was sitting right above the garage, which only added to the sweltering conditions.

Desperate for relief, Alex had her fan blasting at full force. She even opted for a crop top and booty shorts, hoping to ease the unbearable heat still clinging to her body. To make matters worse, the house thermostat was set to a steady 74 degrees, with a stifling 68% humidity. Outside, temperatures were flirting with triple digits, but their family’s climate control seemed stuck on a comfortable—but far too warm—setting for a sick teenager.
After taking a cold shower, Alex felt a little better, but the comfort was short-lived. Sweating bullets once again, she finally reached her breaking point. In an act of desperation, she wandered to the upstairs thermostat and made the executive decision to turn it down by three degrees. Just three degrees—she thought it was a reasonable compromise. After all, she was truly suffering, and she knew her sisters were also feeling under the weather.
However, Alex’s brief moment of relief was short-lived. Moments after she adjusted the thermostat, her dad stormed into the room, visibly upset. “What do you think you’re doing?” he exclaimed, his voice booming down the hallway. “You’ve ruined the atmosphere of the house!”
Bewildered, Alex tried to explain her side of the story. “Dad, I’m sick! It’s too hot up here, and I can’t take it anymore,” she pleaded, hoping a hint of her predicament would soften his heart. But to her surprise, he wasn’t having it. He raised his voice, arguing that the temperature was perfect for everyone else in the house and that she shouldn’t be messing with the thermostat without permission.
To be fair, there was a longstanding rule in their household regarding thermostat settings. Her parents were generally strict about it—no going below 70 or above 76, unless circumstances warranted special exceptions. Usually, they were lenient about allowing her to adjust the temperature a couple of degrees here and there. But apparently, today was not one of those days.
Feeling cornered and frustrated, Alex couldn’t help but roll her eyes at her dad’s dramatic response. “I’m just trying to cool down a little, it’s just three degrees! What kind of atmosphere does that ruin, anyway?” she retorted, trying to prove her point but only escalating the tension.
At that moment, the two were stuck in this bizarre tug-of-war over the house temperature, both firmly planted in their positions. Alex, hot and feverish, just wanted relief, while her dad felt his authority was being undermined in a matter that seemingly impacted the entire household. Eventually, the argument came to a halt, with both father and daughter sulking in silence. What had started as a simple request for cooling had morphed into a full-blown debate over household rules.
As the day wore on, Alex lay in her bed, feeling even worse than before, not just from her sickness but from the frustration of the conflict. She couldn’t shake off the feeling of resentment for her dad’s overreaction. All she had wanted was a few degrees cooler—was that too much to ask for when she was fighting off a fever? Her sisters, also feeling under the weather, had remained silent witnesses to the whole debacle, trapped in their own rooms dealing with the same feverish discomfort.
In the end, Alex found herself reflecting on the situation while staring at the ceiling, wondering if she had truly crossed a line or if her dad was being unreasonable. With all the confusion and heat-induced tension, it was hard to determine who was really the “jerk” in this scenario. But one thing was clear: sometimes, a sick teen just needs a little cooling down, even if it means turning the thermostat down a few degrees.
