When Jamie first met Alex three years ago, she was smitten. Their relationship blossomed quickly, filled with laughter and shared dreams. However, Jamie’s blissful state was soon clouded by an unexpected twist: Alex had a past, and it wasn’t just any past—it was a former hookup named Sarah, who had been his fling before he and Jamie got together.

Jamie always thought that after three years, any lingering connections to Sarah would have faded. She trusted Alex entirely, or at least she thought she did. But during a recent visit to her family, Jamie’s world was thrown into disarray. Alex casually mentioned that he had run into Sarah at a graduation ceremony, and her casual demeanor belied the tension that followed. Sarah had asked if they could hang out one-on-one, and Jamie’s heart sank.
Feeling a surge of insecurity and disbelief, Jamie confronted Alex about it. “Why are you still talking to her after all this time?” she pressed, her voice trembling slightly. She felt a storm brewing within her, and it wasn’t just the thought of Alex meeting up with a former flame; it was the realization that he hadn’t mentioned anything until now. “Can I at least see the chats?” she asked, hoping for some clarity. But Alex’s response was a firm “no.”
Confusion morphed into frustration. Jamie suggested that Alex unfollow Sarah, a simple request she thought would ease her worries. But Alex’s reaction was even more disheartening. “I’m not going to unfollow her,” he stated, his tone defensive as he waved off her concerns. Jamie felt her heart race; every word he said seemed to deepen the pit of doubt in her stomach.
“You’ve got to be kidding me. You’re still in contact with her after three years, and she knows I exist. When she found out about me, she called me the b-word, for crying out loud!” Jamie’s voice echoed the turmoil within her. It was as if a secret that had been kept for so long was now laid bare, and it only made her feel more uncomfortable about Alex’s unwillingness to cut ties.
As the tension in the air thickened, Alex attempted to justify his actions. “I only responded to her to make you jealous,” he said nonchalantly, as if that somehow made it better. Jamie was taken aback. “Make me jealous? Why would you want to do that? Does it really mean that little to you?” His cavalier attitude left her feeling more confused than ever. Was the relationship that they had built over the years built on love, or just on game-playing?
Jamie had always prided herself on being open and communicative in her relationships. But at that moment, she felt blindsided. Trust, which had taken years to build, felt fragile. “If this is how you treat someone who’s supposed to matter to you, then I don’t know what to think,” she said, her voice trembling slightly.
As she retreated into her thoughts, she contemplated the years they had shared. They had built so many memories together—traveling, laughing, supporting each other through tough times. But this new revelation felt like a crack in the foundation of their relationship. Could she really trust him to not engage with someone who had openly disrespected her? Every instinct in her was screaming that something was off.
In the days following their conversation, Jamie found herself analyzing every interaction with Alex. He was, after all, a wonderful boyfriend in many ways, caring and attentive. But the specter of Sarah loomed large, casting doubt on their future. Was Alex’s refusal to unfollow or share chats indicative of deeper issues? Or was it simply a harmless remnant of his past he couldn’t let go of?
Jamie was at a crossroads. She didn’t want to be the kind of girlfriend who demanded social media boundaries, but how could she continue in a relationship where she felt a significant lack of transparency? Each time Alex picked up his phone, a knot would form in her stomach. It was an unsettling reminder of the unresolved tension between them. As she wrestled with these feelings, she realized she had to make a decision soon. The longer she let it fester, the more discontent would build, leading only to further resentment down the line.
In the end, Jamie felt it was essential to talk to Alex again, to lay everything out on the table. She couldn’t allow this fly in her life to keep buzzing around, unsettling everything they had built together. They needed to either find a way forward or accept that what they had was slipping away.
