Young woman in pink dress making a heart shape during a video call at home.

It was supposed to be a fresh start. After a chaotic year with a previous roommate, who seemed to think “quiet hours” were a myth, Jamie was hopeful about her new living arrangement. She had met her new roommate, Sarah, just a week prior during a casual coffee meetup, and they seemed to click. But nothing could prepare Jamie for what happened on their first night sharing a room.

As the clock approached midnight, Jamie was nestled in her bed, trying to block out the day’s events and get some much-needed sleep. After weeks of unpacking, organizing, and settling into her new space, she was ready to finally rest. But as she closed her eyes, she heard the unmistakable sound of video call notifications. The soft lighting from the phone screen illuminated the dim room, followed by Sarah’s voice, vibrant and loud, spilling into the space.

“Yeah, I can totally take that! Just give me a second,” Sarah said with an enthusiasm that pierced the quiet of the night. Jamie grumbled internally, wondering if this was some sort of twisted joke. Hadn’t they discussed their schedules earlier? How did this conversation begin at such an ungodly hour?

Jamie turned to her side, pulling the blanket tighter around her, but the bright light and the booming sound from the call made it impossible to settle in. “Great, let’s do this,” Sarah continued, her phone perched precariously on a pile of clothes as she gestured animatedly. The combination of late-night excitement and bright lights was too much for Jamie, who could feel the edges of frustration creeping in.

After a few minutes of tossing and turning, Jamie decided she couldn’t just lay there. She took a deep breath and summoned the courage to speak up, hoping she could address this without causing tension so early in their cohabitation. “Hey, Sarah?” she called out softly, attempting to keep her voice gentle. “Do you think you could take that call outside?”

Sarah turned, her expression shifting from focused to surprised. “Oh! I didn’t realize it was bothering you. Sorry about that!” She hesitated for a moment before adding, “But it’s kind of important. I have to talk to my sister about some stuff.”

Jamie felt a wave of guilt wash over her. She didn’t want to be the roommate who was overly strict about nighttime activities, especially on the very first night. “I get that, I really do,” she replied. “But I’m a light sleeper, and honestly, I don’t think I can fall asleep with the lights and noise.”

“Yeah, I totally understand.” Sarah’s voice was softer now, which provided Jamie a glimmer of hope. “But we just moved in together! I don’t want to make a bad impression.”

Jamie could sense the tension in the air. It became clear that Sarah didn’t want her first night to be marred by any sort of conflict either. Jamie tried to soften her tone further. “I don’t want to ruin anything either. I promise I’m not trying to be a buzzkill. It would just really help me out if you could take your call in the common area or somewhere else.”

There was a prolonged silence as Sarah weighed her response. Jamie felt her heart race, unsure whether she had overstepped. But then Sarah nodded, a small smile creeping across her face. “You’re right. I’ll just head out to the living room. It’ll be quieter there anyway. Sorry again for being loud!”

Jamie sighed in relief, grateful that Sarah seemed to understand her point. As Sarah gathered her things for the call, Jamie settled back down in bed, fighting exhaustion creeping in. She could hear Sarah moving around, and just before stepping out, Sarah turned and said, “Thanks for being so chill about it! I’ll keep it down. Promise!”

As the door clicked shut behind Sarah and the muffled sounds of the call drifted away, Jamie finally felt herself relax. It was a small victory in the vast world of sharing spaces, but in that moment, it felt significant. She could finally let sleep take her without the noise and light bouncing around the room.

Jamie knew they would face challenges as roommates along the way, but maybe, just maybe, they could figure it out together. After all, this was only Day One.
