After graduating from university last spring, a 22-year-old woman (let’s call her Claire) found herself in a tough spot. During her last year of school, she faced unexpected financial hurdles that left her scrambling. Normally, summer internships provided a steady income, but this time, a series of unforeseen expenses prompted her to reach out to her parents for help. They, however, were in transitional phases of their careers and unable to support her financially.

Claire eventually had to take out student loans and juggle a part-time job just to make ends meet, all while dealing with the emotional turmoil of losing a close friend during her final semester. After graduating, she completed a summer contract, but by August, she was staring down the barrel of unemployment as she realized that her field was highly seasonal. With limited savings and a new apartment lease to pay for, Claire found herself needing to ask her parents for help once again in October, just a month before her rent was due.

To her dismay, Claire’s parents told her to “figure it out” or move back home. Feeling the weight of her financial situation, she took a loan from her grandmother and managed to secure a job in early November. But the stress didn’t end there. While visiting her younger brother, Jake (20M), who was in his third year of university, she discovered something unsettling. It turned out their parents were sending him a monthly allowance of $500 to help with rent and groceries.

During this visit, while enjoying an otherwise pleasant time together, Claire could not shake the feeling of resentment. She had worked diligently throughout her university career, yet here was her brother, who had been reluctantly spending summers working at a local restaurant, receiving a substantial monetary gift every month. When Claire confronted her parents about the disparity in support, they dismissed her concerns with an explanation that left her feeling invalidated. They argued that Jake had been working hard and needed the extra support to make it through school, while Claire’s efforts went unrecognized.

Claire was taken aback by this response; she had also worked hard and had taken on significant student debt while managing a part-time job. Frustrated, she tried to express her feelings in a phone call with her mother, but what started as an earnest discussion quickly escalated into a heated argument. Her mother insisted that the situations were different and that Jake’s circumstances warranted the assistance. Claire felt as if her accomplishments and struggles were being dismissed as less worthy.

The fight ended without resolution, and to add insult to injury, her mother decided they could only discuss the issue with a counselor present. It felt, to Claire, like an attempt to shut down any further conversations about her feelings of neglect and unfair treatment. Wanting to be financially independent, she understood that her parents were not obligated to support her post-graduation, yet the glaring inconsistency in their financial support for her brother stung acutely.

Now, Claire found herself feeling not only unsupported but also increasingly frustrated that her parents seemed unable to acknowledge her struggles. She was financially stable at this point and no longer sought the money; rather, it was the emotional backing that she craved. Feeling like her situation was being trivialized in comparison to her brother’s, she struggled to understand her parents’ perspective, which only compounded her frustration.

In her mind, the specifics of each situation may have differed, but the underlying theme of hard work and the desire for support was universal. It felt difficult and hurtful to be met with such an indifferent attitude from her parents when they chose to be generous with Jake. Now, Claire was left grappling with feelings of inadequacy and exclusion, wondering if there was any way to bridge the gap of understanding between her and her parents without deepening the divide.
