Roommate situations can be a mixed bag; sometimes they work out fine, and other times they turn into a nightmare. Well, let me tell you about a particularly hellish experience that a person had with a roommate who turned out to be nothing short of a parasite.

Right from the beginning, things were off. The roommate, whom we’ll call “Creep,” was habitually late with rent and always had a flimsy excuse. “My work shorted my paycheck” was the line of the day, but somehow, he found money to eat out and take her out for dinner. It didn’t add up, but it was easy to overlook with Creep’s charm being on full display.
What made it even more complicated was his constant attempts to date her, despite claiming he was gay before even moving in. This was confusing and uncomfortable; she would assert their friendship, but Creep would just shrug it off and keep pursuing her in a way that felt invasive. And to top it all off, she had a leg and foot injury, wearing a cast, while he suggested going bowling. That just raised red flags and gave her that gut feeling something wasn’t right.
Things escalated when she planned a trip to Washington to visit her family. What should have been a relaxing time turned into a stressful ordeal. Creep’s financial irresponsibility reached a new level when he failed to pay her back for the rent. This led to her having to buy three non-refundable train tickets home, not to mention having to deal with awful transit that left her navigating without a phone or proper service. She had lent him her other devices for “safety” while she was away, which meant she had no way to communicate or check on her pets.
To top it all off, Creep was comfortably enjoying his internet and phone while she was stranded. She felt alone and cut off, worried about her pets back home as the days dragged on. To make matters worse, her 14-year-old German Shepherd almost died from heatstroke while she was away. Thankfully, some strangers stepped in to help, but the whole situation was nothing short of chaotic.
Upon finally returning home, reality hit her like a freight train. The apartment was trashed. Not just messy—this place was vandalized. Many of her belongings were gone, everything of value had been stolen, and some furniture had been urinated on. Food was missing. It felt like a violation on every level.
As if that wasn’t enough, it was later revealed that she had been assaulted or harassed in her sleep. Despite clearly saying “stop it,” the unwanted advances resumed. It was a surreal and terrifying experience that she documented meticulously, maintaining proof of everything Creep had done. And the financial impact was crushing. She was set back significantly, leaving her scrambling to afford her bills and living off canned food for weeks.
Ultimately, Creep just abandoned the apartment. He knew the risks of staying, so rather than face any potential consequences, he took off, leaving her without needing to go through eviction proceedings. This unexpected departure was the only good thing that came out of the situation—but the damage had already been done.
It took her days to restore her apartment, cleaning and rearranging everything that had been destroyed. Mentally and physically, she felt drained. Her nervous system was shot, and she had frequent doctor visits to deal with the physical symptoms that lingered long after he left.
There was no sugar-coating how she felt; she had learned a hard lesson about trust and the importance of vetting potential roommates properly. But the emotional toll remained, making her wary of future living arrangements. She lamented how someone could pretend to be so helpful and harmless, only to show their true colors later. It’s a stark reminder that you never really know someone until you live with them.
