In a recent post on Reddit, a 26-year-old woman shared her tumultuous relationship with her mother and the frustration that culminated in a heated discussion with her father. Living with her parents to help them financially, she finds herself constantly navigating a minefield of emotional turmoil that’s become a defining aspect of her life.

The woman describes her childhood as one filled with verbal abuse, with her mother often telling her she was a mistake and that she was better off dead. The small, everyday interactions seemed to carry a weight of resentment and disparagement. Whether she ate her mother’s food or chose not to eat, her mother found a way to make her feel like she was in the wrong. For years, these comments chipped away at her self-esteem, leading to a lifetime of struggles with mental health.

Despite some better days where they could share laughs, the cycle of emotional abuse would rear its ugly head. Her mother would twist stories, make derogatory remarks behind her back, and dismiss her feelings with gaslighting responses. These patterns led the daughter to confront her mother multiple times over the years, trying to make her understand the pain that her words caused. Unfortunately, each confrontation fell on deaf ears; her mother’s denial and feigned ignorance only deepened the wounds.

Things came to a head when the daughter fell ill with the flu after working long hours. Feeling exhausted and vulnerable, she attempted to enjoy the dinner she had prepared. However, her mother’s inexplicable rage manifested in the form of loud slamming around the kitchen, which sent her anxiety through the roof. Despite her best efforts to remain calm, she eventually snapped, contributing to the ongoing cycle of conflict.

After a particularly heated moment involving a slammed door and tears, the father stepped in. He expressed his displeasure about the frequent fights between the mother and daughter. He had talked to the mother after the confrontation, revealing that he was aware of the emotional damage caused by her words but insisted that it was the daughter’s responsibility to teach her mother better communication skills.

This revelation hit the daughter like a ton of bricks. She had spent years suffering from the mental abuse and felt deeply invalidated by her father’s comments. She couldn’t understand how he could expect her—someone still healing from years of mistreatment—to take on the role of an educator for her mother. She felt overwhelmed, rejected, and utterly alone in her experiences as she explained her pain, which had been buried deep down for years.

The father’s assertion that the daughter needed to “teach” her mother felt like a burden she wasn’t prepared to shoulder. The daughter believed that her upbringing had equipped her with inadequate tools to navigate her own mental health challenges, let alone take on the daunting task of healing her mother. She had spent countless hours trying to unlearn the toxic habits instilled in her by her mother and felt it was unfair to place that responsibility upon her.

As her father continued to speak, she broke down and revealed just how deeply hurt she felt by her mother’s words throughout her life. She shared memories of being told she was unloved and unwanted, but instead of compassion, her father seemed to be deflecting the responsibility back to her. In an emotional moment, the daughter realized that her father knew about the verbal abuse all along, which only deepened her feelings of betrayal and sadness.

After that heart-wrenching conversation, she retreated to her room to process her emotions. She grappled with feelings of guilt for wanting to distance herself from a cycle of abuse while also feeling sympathy for her mother’s troubled past. She recognized that her mother’s behavior was rooted in her own unresolved pain but felt that this didn’t absolve her from the hurt she had inflicted on her daughter.

Ultimately, the daughter found herself questioning whether she was in the wrong for feeling the way she did. She sought clarity in a community that often wrestles with similar issues, opening the floor to discussions about family dynamics, emotional abuse, and the responsibilities we carry as adult children. Her story resonated deeply, prompting many to reflect on their own experiences with difficult family relationships.
