Back in the early 2000s, in the hustle and bustle of a sales office, there was an employee named James who found himself entangled in a rather ridiculous workplace saga. The protagonist of this story was not just James, but also an older coworker named Bob, who had a reputation for being insufferable. Bob was that traditional “old-timer” who had spent years in the industry, and his antics had earned him a surprising amount of favoritism among management. Unfortunately for everyone else, this meant Bob often meddled in deals and sabotaged sales opportunities for the rest of the team.

James, young and full of that signature bravado that comes with youth, had little patience for Bob’s antics. He was particularly annoyed by how Bob would often let interested clients leave without closing a sale if they didn’t play by his rules—like using a coupon that Bob didn’t approve of. This kind of behavior was infuriating, especially since it impacted not just James’s income but also the team’s chances of hitting bonuses. James felt it was unfair that someone with less respect for common courtesy was causing headaches for everyone else. One day, he reached his breaking point.
On a whim, in a moment of mischief, James decided to play a prank on Bob. Knowing that Bob often left his computer unlocked, he seized the opportunity to change his screensaver to a rather audacious message that read, “Bob is a Jackass.” He watched and snickered from a distance, waiting for the inevitable reaction. To James’s amusement, it took a while for Bob to notice. But when he did, the response was explosive. Bob’s voice echoed through the office as he shouted, “What is this? Who did this? This is defamation!” His outrage was met with laughter from the rest of the staff, all of whom found the whole situation hilariously entertaining.
Bob, not one to back down easily, stormed off to report the incident to the HR department and even up the chain to management. His complaints about “workplace harassment” traveled quickly, leading the managers to take a covert peek at the security footage, where they undoubtedly saw the last remnants of James’s harmless joke. After some chuckles, it didn’t take long for one of the managers to summon James to his office.
“What the hell were you thinking?” demanded Mr. Johnson, the manager. “Do you know how many complaints Bob has made? He’s a nightmare! And you just shared his password!” James protested, explaining it had been a prank—nothing more, nothing less. But Mr. Johnson wasn’t having any of it. “This is a violation of our policy, and we could get in serious trouble. You’re suspended for three days. Get out of this building.”
Feeling a mix of anger and elation, James exited the office. A three-day suspension was frustrating, but it did come with one significant upside: it was Wednesday, which meant a five-day weekend was on the horizon. As he walked to his car, he could hear someone calling him back—“James! Peggy wants to see you!”—but he was already too far gone.
As James drove home, his phone rang incessantly, but he ignored it. He was free and excited about an impromptu beach trip with his wife. They left right away, eager to make the most of their unexpected time off. About an hour into the trip, curiosity got the better of him, and he finally answered his phone. It was Peggy from HR, asking him to sign suspension paperwork. But James calmly explained, “Sorry, Peggy. I was told to leave, and I’m currently out of town.”
Next up was a call from his direct supervisor, who was frantic about missing reports for an important client. James shrugged it off, explaining again that he was on suspension and had left town. “I can’t share my password either, per company policy,” he added cheekily before he turned off his phone to enjoy the peace.
As the weekend rolled on, James reveled in his mini-vacation, blissfully unaware of the chaos brewing back at the office. When he turned his phone back on that Sunday, he found a flood of messages from his manager. It turned out Mr. Johnson hadn’t realized that James led several ongoing projects and was now scrambling to get back in touch. However, James had made his choice: he was told to leave, and he wasn’t coming back until Monday, exactly as instructed.
When he returned to work, there was no major fallout. The deals were still in limbo, but James had successfully taken a long weekend and avoided any serious repercussions. In the end, it was just another day in the life of a salesman, moving on and finding ways to close deals amidst the chaos.
