It was a typical day in the fourth grade at a small elementary school where the sun shone bright and laughter filled the air. However, for one student, named Alex, those sunny days were often overshadowed by his tormentor, a kid named Brad, who was a year older and had a reputation for being a bully. Brad had a knack for picking on kids like Alex, calling him weird and strange, and had made it his personal mission to steal Alex’s belongings. Day after day, Alex found himself dealing with the frustrating reality of having his things taken, whether it was his lunch, school supplies, or even his favorite toy. The tension built between them like a pressure cooker, with Alex silently seething every time Brad strutted away with something that belonged to him.

One warm afternoon, what started as a harmless game of tag on the school lawn turned into a scene that would change the dynamics of their relationship forever. Alex was part of a group playing close to a dirt slope that had been created over time by erosion and the countless feet of children racing up and down. There were eight boys in total, pushing and shoving each other in a playful fashion, when Brad decided to join the fray—an unexpected intrusion by someone who had always been on the sidelines, taunting from a distance. He found his way into their circle, and Alex’s heart sank when he felt a sharp slap on his neck from Brad, a physical manifestation of the ongoing torment that left him furious.

As the game continued, the boys paused to catch their breath. Brad, ever the opportunist, was distracted by a girl he liked, glancing her way while everyone else started to separate for a break. That’s when Alex spotted his chance. Fueled by a mix of anger and desperation, he knew he had to act. Waiting for the right moment, he sprinted toward Brad, who was still oblivious to what was coming. With a swift kick to Brad’s back, Alex sent him tumbling down the slope, rolling through dirt and rocks like a rag doll.

What happened next could only be described as chaotic. Alex stood frozen in horror, half-expecting Brad to get up immediately and retaliate. Instead, he heard a cacophony of curses and shouts as Brad wrestled with the ground. Adrenaline coursing through his veins, Alex made a split-second decision to duck into the nearby bathroom, feigning a need to pee while he listened to the commotion outside. He could hear Brad yelling, furious and bewildered, demanding to know who had done this to him. A strange sense of satisfaction washed over Alex, though it was tinged with the nervousness of possibly getting caught.

When the school day finally came to an end, Alex cautiously peeked outside as the students began to leave. As he stepped out, he spotted Brad sitting on the ground, covered in dirt, his face bloodied, and his clothes ragged. It was a sight that could only be described as poetic justice. Alex felt a rush of triumph but quickly reminded himself to play it cool. After all, he still had to face the rest of his school year while Brad would undoubtedly seek retribution. Yet, as the weeks passed, something completely unexpected happened: Brad stopped coming to school. The whispers among students suggested he had dropped out, leaving Alex to wonder if the incident on the slope had played a role in his disappearance.

Years have gone by since that day, but for Alex, it remains a vivid memory. He often reflects on the conflict, still amused by the idea that Brad never found out who was responsible for his tumble down the dirt slope. Those moments on the playground were encapsulated in a swirl of emotions—fear, anger, and a fleeting sense of power. Even now, Alex chuckles to himself at the thought of how one moment of rebellion against a bully ultimately slipped under the radar, leaving a mystery that stayed just between him and that dirt slope.
