It was a typical Monday afternoon in Liguria, a picturesque coastal region in North West Italy, and a 14-year-old girl was just finishing another one of her singing lessons. Like clockwork, she would hop on the train back to her tiny village, where a bus would take her the rest of the way home. But on this particular day, things would take a turn that would stick with her for years.

As the train rumbled towards her stop, she noticed him—a tall man sitting a few rows ahead. She could feel his gaze on her, unsettling and persistent. Her skin prickled, and it became impossible to ignore him. She squirmed in her seat, pulling her tank top down and tugging at her shorts in an instinctive effort to cover herself. The moment the train came to a halt, she stood up and decided to move to another carriage, hoping to escape his unsettling stare.

Unfortunately, fate had other plans. As she stepped off the train, her heart sank. The station was eerily quiet; it was just the two of them—the tall man and her. An unsettling realization washed over her as they exited the train simultaneously, leaving the station devoid of any other passengers. In a split second, her instincts kicked in, and she felt a rush of adrenaline. Fight or flight? In that moment, she chose flight.

She hurried down the stairs and practically sprinted towards the nearby bus stop, glancing over her shoulder. To her horror, he was still behind her, his gaze fixed on her every move. Panic surged through her as she quickened her pace, desperate for a place to hide. That’s when she remembered her friend’s mother, who owned a hair salon not too far away.

With every step feeling heavier than the last, she made her way to the salon, her mind racing with fear. She could see the reflection of the tall man in the glass panes outside, and it made her stomach churn. Heart pounding and hands trembling, she waved frantically at the salon door, praying her friend’s mother would be there. Thankfully, luck was on her side; the woman was still inside, wrapping up her day, and let her in just in time.

The moment the door clicked shut behind her, she felt a wave of relief wash over her. But as she glanced back through the window, her heart dropped again. The tall man was now pacing outside, glancing inside the salon with an unsettling intensity. He seemed to be waiting, watching, and the last thing she wanted was to be the focus of his attention.

Time dragged on inside the salon. She could hear the clattering of brushes and the soothing sound of water, but her thoughts were miles away, consumed by the creepy man lurking just outside. He seemed to be in his own world, walking back and forth, and she could only hope he would lose interest and leave. But no, he persisted, standing there for nearly 45 minutes, and every tick of the clock felt like an eternity.

Her dad was supposed to pick her up anytime, no questions asked, but the thought of what could have happened if not for that small piece of luck haunted her. What if her dad had been tied up at work? What if the salon had been closed? What if she hadn’t been quick enough? It was those “what ifs” that played like a broken record in her mind, long after she left the salon, safe and sound.

Eventually, her father arrived, and she didn’t waste a moment to scurry out the door and into his arms. The tall man was nowhere to be seen, but the feeling of his eyes on her haunted her for weeks. Every time she took the train after that, she couldn’t shake the feeling of unease, glancing over her shoulder, half-expecting to see him lingering in the shadows.

It’s a memory that’s stuck with her, a reminder of how quickly things can shift from ordinary to terrifying. The blurred line between safety and danger is a lesson that’s often learned the hard way.
